Church Beyond Tomorrow A very interesting and educational seminar was held Saturday, November November 27, in Newcastle United Church. Guest speaker for the day Reverend Dr. John Sullivan, Kingsview United Church, Oshawa. For those in attendance, a real treat, as speaker was not only excellent, excellent, but also an accomplished musician. musician. Both playing the piano and leading in the fine array of singing. Dr. Sullivan sure kept the audience's attention. Our speaker has been in ministry over 30 years and remembers when our United Churches were full at that time, but today's world is different story. We arc losing touch with younger generation and our seminar dealt with many new and innovative ideas how to strengthen our church, as we move into the 21st century. Music is a most important issue, as speaker feels there should be 40- 60% of service, spent in music. There are new hymn books coming out, and we the older generation should not be afraid to try new music! We need to reach out to the younger women in our congregations and find new types of activities and programs. This also for the Sunday school ages, as bigger and brighter rooms and surroundings i will encourage more interest. An excellent video tape, "Discovering the Future" courtesy of "General Motors" was shown and it emphasized a new word and meaning for many of us "Paradigms" - fixed ideas, values and expectations, and how to process information, if we arc to understand what is happening in today's world, and help to improve our future world. Excellent topics also covered included "Baptism", and "Aging Membership." Also suggested suggested early morning church services, a new idea. Following discussions a very excellent excellent sing along, with Dr. Sullivan at piano. With a very beautiful communion communion service served to everyone, with Reverend Donald Stiles and Reverend David Black officiating. A very interesting day for all present from Ncwtonvillc, Shiloh, Kendal, Orono-Kirby and Newcastle United Churches. A delicious chicken dinner was much enjoyed by all present. U.C.W. Christmas Party The annual meeting and Christmas Christmas pot-luck dinner of Orono U.C.W. was held Thursday evening, November 25, in main hall, with good attendance. Reverend and Mrs. Russell were our guests, and Grace was sung with Joyce Gray at piano. The tables looked attractive with candles alii and a bountiful buffet dinner of hot and cold dishes, were much enjoyed by all. A well-filled box of groceries was on stage, ns gifts to the Food Bank. Joyce generously provided excellent excellent Christmas music while kitchen staff cleaned up tables. President Thelma Gilbank welcomed welcomed everyone and read "True Christmas Joy". Minutes were approved approved as written. Adcle handed out copies of treasurer's report and prepared prepared budget given by Donna Scott, We were happy to have a visitor from a long distance, Anne Nagttra- jtui, Penn. U.S.A, visiting her mother Mrs. ILL, Gilbank, Shirley Moffat gave nominating report and we still need "a "supply convenor", as Dorothy Barnett retires after seven years of excellent service, Belly Chatterton gives the "In Mcmorium" and following names were read - Marjorie McGee, Etta Irwin, Irwin, Georgina Harness, Leona Wood, followed by prayer.
