i s S The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, December 15,1993 'S' Championship for BRHL Carnation Florist Atoms 3 HOCKE Bowmanville Figure Skaters Compete in Raccoon Rally All of the above members of the Bowmanville Figure Skating Club competed in the Raccoon Rally that they hosted at the Recreation Complex on Saturday, November 27. Of note, Hilary Scoffield (third from left in the front row) placed first in the Pre-Kinder 'A' girls' Flight One category. Hilary is only three years old. In total, Bowmanville entered 31 skaters, winning 23 medals, including seven golds. Carnation faced off against Peterborough Peterborough St. Alphonsus in their first game of the day. The Carnation team skated hard, with excellent forechecking throughout the game, along with strong goal tending from Mike Shrives. The Carnation snipers were out in force, netting nine goals and winning by a score of 9-1. Scoring Scoring for Carnation were Tyler Mitchell Mitchell with two goals and an assist, Phil Hopkins with two goals, Jeff Ball with a goal and an assist, Cole Linfoot Linfoot with two assists, Andrew Warren Warren with an assist and game MVP A1 Rahme with three goals and three assists. BRHL Checkers Play in Grafton Peewee Tourney On Saturday, December 11, the BRHL Checkers team played in the Grafton Peewee Tournament. The first game was a penalty-filled match against Cobourg. Checkers spent most of the game playing short- Camation met a bigger challenge from the Bancroft Jets in a grinding game. Carnation rose to the occasion, occasion, with their goalie, Mike Shrives, making key saves and earning earning game MVP honours. Carnation clinched a 'B' championship, defeating defeating the Jets 4-2. Scoring for Carnation Carnation were Jeff Ball with two goals and one assist, JJ Worden with one goal and one assist, A1 Rahme with one goal, Cole Linfoot with one as sist and Andrew Warren with one , assist. Carnation advanced to the 'A' fi- : nais, but were shut out by a rep team < from Uxbridge. Earning the game MVP honours for Carnation was Jeff Ball. All players from Carnation should feel proud of their accomplishments accomplishments in Apsley, playing with a lot of grit and determination. Great hockey, Carnation. Draw Winner Given Gift Certificate .'IffConsequently, the, Checkers boÿs "got- off to a slow start scoring and didn't notch one until the second peri- old when Alan Robb took a pass from Gerrit Van Dyke and skated in with a nice deke to move within two goals of Cobourg. In the third, Kevin Stoneburg took a shot from in close that was stopped, but Fraser McArthur was there to stuff in the rebound. Then, Mark Beitle got the puck back to Ryan Wood whose bullet from the left point deflected off one of the Cobourg defencemen. Unfortunately for Checkers, they were unable to get the tying marker and ended up losing 4-3. The second game was against Port Hope and in the first period it was Alan Robb scoring on a power play to make it 1-0. Then Scott Westlake made a good effort at the blueline to keep the puck in the zone and passed to to Joel Tymchuk who popped in Checkers' second marker. In the third, Alan Robb scored his third of the tournament, with the assist going to Ryan Wood. The final score was 3-1 for Checkers. Due to the hugh number of penalty minutes in the first game, combined with the first loss, Checkers was disqualified disqualified from the tournament early. Checkers Major Novice Toros Are 'A' Finalists The Checkers Variety Major Novice Novice Toros travelled to Belleville December December 10-12 and came home 'A' Division Division finalists, Checkers Variety started the weekend weekend with a 3-0 win over Collingwood. Singles went to Garrett McKnight, Jamie Jamie Bryant and Brett McKee. Assists to Steven Hatfield, Trevor Baker, Mark Lemieux and Brett McKee. On Saturday, the Toros took on Belleville, tying at 2-2. Scan Lefort and Zach Thoraval had the goals, with assists to Adam Bowen, Garrett McKnight and Brett McKee. The Checkers Variety Toros, needing needing a win to advance to the finals, skated to a 3-1 win over Cobourg. Goals went to Mark Lemieux, Jamie Bryant and Brett McKee. Assists were earned by Matt Gross, Trevor Baker, Justin Naklicki and Brett McKee. The Toros took on Belleville in the finals, losing a 5-1 decision. The lone goal was from Brett McKee, assisted by Trevor Baker and Darryl Master- son. Solid goallcnding from Craig Sykes and Jcrrcd Williams put the Toros Toros into the finals. 1 In York-Simcoe league play, the Checkers Variety club split a pair of games. Toros 3, Markham 2 -- Sean Lefort, Lefort, Craig Barraball and Zach Thoraval Thoraval had goals, helpers to Scan Lefort, Mark Lemieux and Garrett McKnight (2). Toros 1, Pickering 3 •• Jamie Bryan from Trevor Baker had the lone goal. The winner of a $100 gift certificate from the Bowmanville Sports Shop in-house give-away is Ron Bilcox.
