8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvilic, Wednesday, January 12,1994 HI x mïmmm Brought to you by... Corner of Courtice Rd. and Hwy. 2 Sales and Servicing Salesperson of the week Gord Miles I Eagles Face Goaltender Decision as Playoffs Approach by Brad Kelly Just before Christmas, the Bowmanvilic Bowmanvilic Goodyear Eagles began to solidify their hold on the number one spot in the league standings. With only five games remaining in the regular season, Bowmanvilic has all but assured itself of the number number one ranking. There is little left to discuss there. But another question has surfaced surfaced regarding the number one spot. Though it has nothing to do with the league standings. With the return of over-age goal- tender Drew Campbell to the lineup on Sunday night, the question of who Bowmanvilic will go with as their number one goalie in the playoffs has surfaced. Campbell made a strong bid for the position with his performance on Sunday night, backstopping Bowmanvilic Bowmanvilic to an easy 9-1 win over the Lakefield Chiefs. Out of the lineup since an errant shot by Jeremie Pate during a practice practice in November broke his right hand, Campbell, though not tested very often, handled the shots he did face with relative ease. In essence, he made a strong bid to regain his status as the team's number one goaltender. "Àt first, I felt a little tired, but once I got into the game, I fell right back into (a routine)," said Campbell Campbell following Sunday night's victory. victory. When asked what his views were on the goaltending situation, Camp bell chose to lake a wait-and-see approach. approach. He opted, instead, to let his play do the talking for him. But, just down the hall, holding court with members of the press following following the game, coach Mark Watson Watson was touting Barry Crawford as his number one goalie. For now. "Crawford is our number one guy. He's earned the spot," declared declared Crawford. "We're just lucky the other two (Campbell and Jason Bailey) are good goalies. And Drew adds a lot of experience to the team." With that, Crawford quickly left the door open for Campbell to step up and assume the starling role once again. "That can change. Nothing is ever etched in stone," said Watson. "We'll go with the guy who is hot." Prior to Sunday's game, that guy was Crawford. However, at the beginning beginning of the year, he wasn't even with the Eagles. Chris McCarthy, who has since joined Richmond Hill in the Metro 1 League, and Campbell provided a solid tandem in goal. But, when Crawford was signed, and Campbell went out with a broken broken hand, a vacancy opened in Bow- manville's goal crease. Jason Bailey, Bailey, who attended training camp in the fall but was cut, was brought into the fold to serve as a backup to Crawford. It was at that time that the Eagles, Eagles, who had won only once in their first five games, began to make a run at first place in the standings. In recognition of the 25th anniversary of Jr. C hockey in Bowmanvilic, this year's edition of the Eagles have invited the original Bowmanvilic Whiz Kids back for an exhibition game against the Ajax Spartans team of 1968. In addition to the game, players and fans can renew acquaintances during a dance that will follow the game. Both the reunion game and the dance will be held at the Recreation Complex. Tickets for the game and dance can be purchased from Cathy Adams 623-3102, Mike Laing 579-6245, John Oyler 436-3397, or Dave Wright 623-2964. ■iiiiiiiiiii EAGLES GAME -- There is no home game for the Bowmanvilic Eagles this Sunday night. And, if you consider the opposition for the game on January 23, you might conclude that there really aren't any home games until the final one on Tuesday, January 25. We couldn't be speaking of anyone other than the Bobcaygcon Bullets, when they come to town for the game on Sunday, January 23. As it stands now, Bobcaygcon will likely be the first round playoff opponent of Bowmanvilic as well. LEAGUE DROPS A TEAM -- The Newcastle Men's Town League, which operates on Sunday nights, has been reduced from six to five teams for the remainder of the schedule. A declining number of players showing up for one of the teams forced the league to drop them from the schedule. The remaining five teams will finish the season, and then enter a round robin playoff series to decide a league champion. We will have all of their playoff results in Scoreboard once post-season play begins. ••••eeeeeeee CARD SHOW ON SATURDAY -- For local collectors looking for that special sports card to finish a set, you may want to venture to the Recreation Complex this Saturday between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. A number of tables will be set up, with vendors carrying a wide assortment of cards and sports memorabilia. The next show at the Recreation Complex is scheduled for January 29. If you need a reminder, cut out the add that appears elsewhere on the sports pages. IIIIIMIIIII ARGONAUT SPEAKS TO LOCAL YOUTH GROUP - Just received a call that Toronto Argonaut football player Brian Warren will be speaking to a number of youth groups at the St. Tliercsc Church in Courtice on Sunday, January 23, at 7:30 p.m. The evening will be a part of the Athletes in Action program, which involves Christian athletes speaking to youth groups about the importance of spirituality in their lives. That evening just happens to be the same night that the Bowmanvilic Eagles arc playing, as they will be hosting the lowly Bobcaygcon Bullets. Our decision is which event to attend? Would somebody be kind enough to call in the score of the hockey game? With a 18-1-1 mark in their last 20 games, they appear destined for a •second straight league championship. championship. With Campbell's return, and now three goalies vying for playing time, the picture in net is somewhat clouded. "It's a nice problem to have," said Watson. "We need three goalies goalies in case one of them gets hurt." For Campbell, who was left to defend the net by himself on many nights early in the season, he has noticed noticed a tremendous change in the play of his teammates. "We've got the team that can go, all the way. The defence is amazing. Hooper's Part Of Tournament Against Whitby Hooper's Trophies were among the Bowmanvilic entries taking part in the Whitby Optimist House League Tournament. Tournament. Their first game against Algoma Orchard of Whitby was well-played and exciting to watch. Whitby took an early 2-0 lead in the first and held on until halfway through the second period when Andrew Andrew Laton scored an unassisted goal to cut the Whitby lead in half. Late in the third, Laton came through again, assisted by Nolan Dower to tie the game 2-2. Hooper's kept the pressure on, but did not manage manage to move ahead. Final score was 2- 2, with the Hooper's MVP going to Andrew Laton. The following morning, Hooper's squared off against Whitby Toyota. Toyota went ahead 1-0 in the first, with no reply from Hooper's, then added to their lead in the second period. period. Despite a good team effort, Hooper's Hooper's was unable to get on the score- board. Final score was Toyota 2, Hooper's Hooper's 0. Hooper's MVP was Clint Hawkshaw. . Later that day, Hooper's Trophy met Mr. Sub. The two Bowmanvilic teams were both out of contention in the tournament. In spite of, strong goaltending from both Hooper's goalies, goalies, the team suffered a 2-0 loss to Mr. Sub. Hooper's MVP was Michael Luxton. The coaches and players of Hooper's Hooper's Trophies would like to thank the Whitby Optimists for an enjoyable break from the Christmas rush, and wish everyone a happy and prosperous prosperous New Year. "There is only one shot, and then the defence clears the puck away." He also noticed a difference in the chemistry of the team. A change in attitude, and 18 wins in the past 20 games certainly has contributed to a rise in the team's confidence level. Bowmanvilic showed again on Sunday night just why they are the premier team in the league. They ran up a 7-0 lead before relinquishing relinquishing a late third period goal on Sunday Sunday night against Lakefield. And, in the process of their 9-1 victory, they extended their home ice winning streak to nine games. Curtis Hodgins, Brad Robinson and Gary Adams collected a pair of goals, while Jeff Murphy, Pete Young and Dave Real tallied once each. The line of Hodgins, Robinson and Todd Cannings had another big night, collecting four goals and five assists between the three of them. Bowmanvilic has only two home games remaining, one of them against the pitiful Bobcaygcon Bullets. Bullets. Should the Eagles remain in first place, it will likely be Bobcay- geon who will provide the opposition opposition in the opening round of the playoffs. That could mean the next competitive competitive game, once the regular season season concludes, would be as far away as early March. "The last two games of the year will be good for us because we play Port Perry and Uxbridge," said Watson. "That will give us a good tune-up before the playoffs. We'll need a couple of good games to get us going." Those games may come from college teams, who will fill a void if Bowmanvilic chooses to take a bye in the semi-final round of the playoffs. Drew Campbell made his return to the Bowmanvilic lineup on Sunday night, losing his bid for a shutout with only eight minutes remaining remaining in the game. The over-age goalie has been out of action since breaking his right hand during a practice in November. Defenceman Dave Watt (#2) throws a stiff body check on Lakefield's Scott Johnson during their Jr. C league game on Sunday night at the Recreation Complex. Bowmanvilic had little trouble recording their ninth win in a row on home ice, hammering Lakefield by a 9-1 score. fred's autobody ltd.
