10 The Independent, Canadian Statesman-Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, January 22,1994 Dodd and Souter Salutes 35 Years Of Business at Whitby Location On January 15, 1959 Grant Dodd and Howard Souter opened Dodd and Souter Paint and Wallpapering Store at 107 Byron St. S., Whitby, Ontario, as a paint and wallpaper store as well as painting and decorating. At that time we had one painter on staff, Scotty Myles, and Howard and Grant went out at night time and weekends to paper hang. It was not long until we had two or three painters on staff and a full time paper hanger. Over a few years we got to the point where we had six decorators on staff and as many as fourteen to sixteen sixteen on staff during the summer months. We had contracts to paint the Public Schools as well as the two High Schools for a number of years. Also, we painted for Red Wing Orchards Orchards and Dupont of Canada, in Whitby and Ajax, for a number of years, as well as homes, interior and exterior, in Whitby, Ajax, Oshawa and Brooklin. In October of 1959, we started to sell carpets and broadloom.. In 1962, we branched out into custom custom made draperies. At this time we had paint and wallpaper, carpets, draperies and custom decorating, with a staff of about eight to ten full time people. In approximately 1972, Mr. Dodd and Mr. Souter's sons, Grant Souter and Guy Dodd, joined the family business to learn the decorating trade and worked with us for a number of years. In 1975, Dodd and Souter Sold the paint and wallpaper part of the business business to Mr. Bill Perkins. Dodd and Souter kept the carpet, broadloom and drapery part of the business. In 1977, after a great eighteen year business partnership, Howard Souter retired from the business and Grant Dodd took over completely with his son Guy. In 1981, Grant Dodd built the new building at 104 Byron St. S., Whitby, Ontario, just across the street from where they started, putting everything everything under one roof, carpet, vinyl, tile and draperies. In January 1983, Grant Dodd thought that he would retire and sold the company to his son Guy. After about four or five -months, Grant Dodd found that he missed the business business and he and Guy decided that it would be good for Grant to come back to work. In June 1983, Grant Dodd bought back into the business and he and his" son ran the business together as partners partners until 1988, at the time of the loss of Grant Dodd's son Guy. The business business was growing in leaps and bounds. Howard Souter's son, Grant • Souter, who had come back to work at the store in 1983, was a big help. In 1988, Grant Dodd started to sell shares of the company. Grant sold shares to Grant Souter, Steve Sandford and Chris Hoddy. We now have four partners and are doing well. At the same time that shares were sold, Grant Dodd made Grant Souter, General Manager, and he is doing a fine job, as well as Steve and' Chris. We also have to remember our boss number one, Cheryl Bickle. If it was not for Cheryl, none of us would have a job, as she keeps us in line. Grand Dodd also can't forget about his installers. Grant Dodd says that they are the best any carpet store could have. They arc very conscientious conscientious and great with our customers and we have very little or no complaints complaints regarding them. It seems that when a person comes to work for Dodd and Souter they never want to leave. At the present time we have staff employed with us from four to sixteen years, and Grant Dodd, thirty five years. Grant Dodd is very proud of this 35-year record, and can only thank .his customers and his staff for a great 35 years of business in the great Town of Whitby. Thank you all Grant Dodd President: Dodd and Souter Ontario Ontario Municipal Board Commission des affaires municipales de l'Ontario IN THE MATTER OF Section 17(11) of the Planning Act. 1983 AND IN THE MATTER OF a referral to this Board by the Honourable Minister of Municipal Affairs, on requests by Bowmanville Mall and 829426 Ontario Inc. for consideration of Proposed Amendment No. 40 to the Official Plan for the Town of Newcastle (now the Municipality of Clarington).
