First Vice Amos Langley acted as Chairman in the absence of President Tony Clements. The meal was a spaghetti spaghetti dinner, self-created by members members of the club. After dinner, Lion John Begelli introduced introduced Durham Regional Police Officer, Pieter Vander Duim and "Leo", together, they make up the Canine Unit of die Durham Regional Police Service. Leo is a three year old German Shepherd, he is trained to track and retrieve persons and articles. articles. This could be lost children, fugitives fugitives or evidence. After receiving 18 months training in Holland and a further further 2 months in Toronto, Leo now lives with his trainer/handler Pieter, along with another dog, four children and Pieter's wife in Bowmanville. Pieter must also keep a log of all the training Leo gets to satisfy the court when a case comes up where the dog was involved. The Canine Unit is based at 18 division in Whitby and serves all of Durham Region. Pieter told the group that Leo will retire with him when the time comes that he is replaced by another dog. But for now Leo is earning his keep by locating locating lost people and retrieving stolen property. One very important function function that Leo is involved in is public relations. Aside from speaking to groups like the Lions Club, Pieter and Leo are continuously being stopped wherever they are to chat and meet the public. After many questions Pieter and Leo were thanked by a new Lion Mike Swaga, who is also a member of the Durham Region Police Service. Service. Also on hand to speak to the club was Lion Richard Cooper from the Centre Hastings/Madoc Lion's Club. Richard came to ask for support in his quest for the District Vice Chairman Chairman Office. The elections will be held at the District Convention in Kingston next Spring. Many "thank you" notes were read from local seniors for the gifts and cards delivered to them prior to Christmas. Treasurer Terry Graham reported that the McCaw Voice Synthesizer purchased with the assistance of the Lioness Club is now completely paid for. This device will allow a local lady to communicate verbally for the first time in her life. Also the backstop backstop at the Newtonville Public School is now completed and paid for. Correspondence was received from Clarke High School asking for assistance in sponsoring the Canadian Canadian National Academic Decathlon. On April 16 students from across Canada will be coming to Clarington to com pete in this event. Clarke High School has competed for the past three years and now have the opportunity opportunity to hold it on home turf. Assistance Assistance will be discussed at the Director's Director's meeting. The next Newcastle Lion's meeting meeting will be held in the Lions Room at the Newcastle Community Hall on January 26. Fool for Love Opens January 28th The Durham Shoestring Performers theatre group presents Fool For Love, an intense drama about the nature of love and sexual attraction attraction by American playwright Sam Shepherd. Appearing in the play will be Courtice resident and actress Susan Lowry. Lowry, as May, is seen here with Martin, played by Jeff Kellar of Oshawa. A play for mature audiences only, Fool For Love is being presented at the Arts Resource Centre in Oshawa on Jan. 28 and 29, and Feb. 3,4, and 5.
