Sergeant Rick Bates, an Informations Informations Systems worker with the Durham Durham Regional Police, is one of 25 local local police service personnel who'll be counting the calorics until Spring. He figures losing his share of the 500 pounds will be a piece of cake. He hopes to lose approximately one pound a week over the course of the contest. Some of his teammates, he admits, have a lot more to lose. "It means no more doughnuts for some of the guys," says Sgt. Bates. "For me, it means no more of my favorite favorite breakfast -- waffles and syr- up." Most mornings now, he digs into a bowl of dry cereal in an ounce of skim milk. Lunch for the 190-pound, 38-year- old sergeant is a toss-up between egg salad (made with low-cal mayo) on calorie reduced bread, or a vegetarian 'tortilla. "I used to eat out two or three times every week. I'll have to cut that down and learn to cook for myself." Joining the weight loss challenge coincides perfectly with Sgt. Bates' personal decision to "clean up his life style." He quit smoking on Jan. 19th, the very day he promised to lay off the waffles and syrup. And he's not the only officer who ever developed unhealthy eating habits. habits. The stereotypical image of a cop guzzling coffee, and chomping dough nuts is not entirely fabrication, he admits. admits. 'Tvc tried not to propagate that myth," he says. However, it's a myth that is probably based on some fact. Perhaps that's due to sedentary work habits, sitting in a cruiser all day, eating eating on the run, and the late-night shift work. At 4:00 in the morning, there isn't much else open except doughnut shops." Police are hoping to raise $5,000 for The Sunshine Foundation. This is the 4th year the Battle of the Badges has been going on, but it is the first time the Durham Police have challenged the Toronto police force. Sgt. Bates said he is happy to be helping out a worthwhile charity and, at the same time, promoting better lifestyle habits. The Durham Regional Police won't revert back to their fattening snacks at the conclusion of the 10- wcek challenge. Weight Watchers will bring their counselling services directly to the police police headquarters, after the contest. Police Services will continue to support the Weight Watchers program at work in order to reduce long-term health costs. Officers will be allowed to attend the 45-minute sessions during their shift, but will be required to pay the registration fee themselves. The kick-off for the Battle of the Badges event is scheduled for today, January 26th, at Metropolitan Toronto Police Headquarters in Toronto, where teams will reveal their strategy to lose weight and raise funds. Real Estate with Betty Smith THE R-2000 HOME I recently had clients ask me what an R-2000 home is as they had seen the term used in a Real Estate ad, I hope this information will help. The R-2000 home represents an advanced standard of new home construction in Canada. These homes are built with great attention to details such as extra insulation and top quality windows and doors, all of which means fewer air leaks and drafts and very even temperatures from attics to basements. Due to the reduction of air leakage, heating costs arc dramatically reduced as arc noise levels. All R-2000 homes are equipped with a continuously operating ventilation system that extracts stale indoor air and replaces it with fresh outdoor air. Before a home can be called an R- 2000 home it must be inspected, tested and certified by the Canadian Home Builders Association. Only builders who arc specifically trained are eligible to become R-2000 builders and they must also be in good standing witli the Ontario New Homd Warranty Programme. A home may be built to R-2000 standards, but not necessarily certified. This certificate, however, is a valuable asset when buying or selling a home. For further information, check with the builders in your area. Your questions and comments arc always welcome.
