It Is a good time to note the difference between a heart attack and a stroke. À heart attack occurs when the blood supply to the heart muscle Is cut off. This Is due to a blood clot blocking blood vessels feeding feeding the heart. These blood vessels may have already been narrowed due to plaque built up. The blockage means the heart doesn't receive oxygen and begins to die. Strokes are caused by a sudden blockage of blood supply to the brain. Over half of strokes are caused by a blockage to the main artery going to the brain. About 25% are caused by a travelling blood clot that lodges In the brain. A smaller number of strokes occur when a blood vessel ruptures ("aneurysm") In the brain. Smoking Is still a big risk factor in heart disease and stroke. But it Is never too late to quit. A research project studied 100,000 women who quit smoking. The risk of stroke reduced by 22% in two years and by close to 90% in four years.
