16 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 5,1994 Rivalry Intensifies as Weight Loss Battle Reaches Halfway Mark When a mysterious-looking package package arrived recently at Police Headquarters, Headquarters, did officers call for the bomb squad or sniffer dogs? No, they called for an expert of another kind; their Weight Watchers At Work leader leader Kelly Taylor. "We were pretty sure we knew what was in the box and who sent it," said Metro Police Inspector Brian Cove-Shannon. "When Kelly arrived and the box was opened, our worst fears were realized. realized. The box conatined doughnuts. Not just your plain doughnuts, but chocolate and cream-filled ones too. Is there no end to the lengths these fiends will go?" The doughnuts, and pizzas and taunting fax messages are just some of the psychological pranks being played between the police services of Metro, Peel and Durham as they compete in The 1994 Weight Watchers Watchers Battle of the Badges, a unique weight loss and fund raising campaign. campaign. The Battle of the Badges, now at its mid-way point, is based on participation participation in a 10 week Weight Watchers At Work Program that combines group support and lifestyle education in weekly meetings at each services' headquarters. 1 Weight Watchers contributes the program fee to the designated charity, in this case The Sunshine Foundation, and the police officers and members collect pledges tied to the amount of weight each loses. Because each service has a different number of participants, the winning team is declared based on. the highest average weight loss. Individual winners will also be acknowledged acknowledged for their efforts as top "loser" and top fundraiser. "We are sworn to secrecy," said Inspector Tony Turner of Durham Region, "but I can confirm that our team is committed to winning. When the final tallies are announced, I'm confident that Durham will come out on top. The pranks are just part of the traditional rivalry between the services. services. Of course, though, I am neither confirming nor denying that we had anything to do with the five doublecheese doublecheese anchovy pizzas delivered to Metro last week." Inspector Carl Spratt of Peel Regional Regional Police takes a more philosophical philosophical approach to the matter. "I know Peel will have the biggest losers, in a weight sense that is, but the big winners winners will be the ill or injured children who benefit from the wish-granting work of The Sunshine Foundation." Interim reports indicate a very tight race between the three police services with some participants achieving remarkable results. Weight Watchers general manager for southern southern and central Ontario, Marguerite Neri, says that "the more than 70 men and women participating in the Battle of the Badges are all following The At Work Program and achieving safe and sustainable weight-loss results. results. Regardless of the final outcome, outcome, everyone is coming out a winner." winner." For information concerning the 1994 Weight Watchers Battle of the Health Workers Disturbed By Cutbacks at Hospitals In response to an alarming new study on conditions in Ontario's hospitals, hospitals, hospital workers from Oshawa, Lindsay, Peterborough and surrounding cities and towns in central central Ontario will call on Health Minister Minister Ruth Grier and all area MPP's to immediately halt the. government's massive hospital restructuring program. program. Since its release, numerous other examples of extremely disturbing practices and diminishing care have been reported by central Ontario hospital hospital workers which support much of the evidence presented in the pilot study. The study by York University, "Voices from the Ward", documents reports of rising infection rates, filthy conditions, dangerous practices, inadequate inadequate patient care and workers being pushed past the limits of endurance. It starkly reveals the real impact of the government's financial squeeze on health care budgets. ' "It is imperative that we move quickly to reverse these trends. Our members have decided that it's cru- cial to put as much pressure on the provincial government as possible," said Gwen Hewitt, Executive Member Member of the Ontario Council of Hospital Hospital Unions and President of CUPE Local 2787 at the Minden hospital. The restructuring of provincial hospitals began in 1991 and was to have been accomplished over three to five years. The idea was to.promote a shift to community-based care, but so far, no equivalent community-based services have been set up to take the placé of rapidly disappearing hospital care and the workers who provide it. Many organizations have pointed out that under the guide of reform and restructuring, the government is actually unloading the financial and care burden off of itself and on to individuals individuals - mostly women. "Until hospital funding is stabilized, stabilized, democratization and accountability accountability measures are introduced through the Public Hospitals Act, staffing levels are "adequate and the community services that were meant to replace disappearing hospital care are really in place, restructuring must not proceed," Hewitt said.
