The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 9,1994 7 Clarke's Senior Girls Seek Volleyball Gold ; ^ Phone Brad Kelly at 623-3303 b ON 3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT -- Those who have been ; asking whether we are going to organize our popular 3 on 3 basketball t tournament again this year need not ask any longer. We are currently ' making all the necessary arrangements to host his year's tournament in ! either late April or early May, depending on the availability of the ' gymnasium at Bowmanville High School. We are also hoping to make a couple of changes to this year's tournament, making it even better than last year. In both previous tournaments (1992 and 1993), we have had 140 boys and girls from ages 10-18 participate in the two-day event, which begins on a Friday night and carries over into Saturday. All the details of this year's tournament will be published in next Wednesday's edition of The Canadian Statesman. ■•eeeeeseeee DURHAM CHRISTIAN WINS SILVER ™ The senior boys' team from Durham Christian High School won a silver medal at the eight-team Ontario Christian Schools Championships that were held in Kitchener this past weekend. The girls weren't as fortunate, losing out in the quarter-finals. Prior to the weekend tournament, the girls' team reached the semi-finals of DYSSAA, but lost out two games to one to Stouffville. The winner of DYSSAA qualifies for the Ontario championships. It was quite an accomplishment for the Durham Christian team to advance that far, considering the relatively small size of the school compared to others. ••■■■•■••••a INTERNATIONAL SKI JUMPING Orono ski jumper Jeremy Blackburn continues to make impressive strides on the international scene. At a six-country Intercontinental Cup ski jumping competing at Olympic Park in Calgary, Jeremy placed seventh overall with 210.5 points. More than 30 jumpers from Canada, the United States, Austria, Slovenia, Slavakia and Italy competed in the two-day event 1 FISCHER OFF; TO HAMILTON --- Word from Toronto is that football player Richard Fischer will be attending the training camp of the Hamilton Tiger Cats, hoping to land a job with the CFL club for this season. You might recall that Richard attended training camp last year, but returned to the University of Toronto, helping his team to the Vanier Cup. At a recent banquet to honour the Canadian champions, Richard was given a special recognition award for the determination he showed after returning from a serious knee injury he suffered the year before. by Brad Kelly The volleyball factory, better known as Clarke High School, is about to unleash its gold medal model for 1994. This time, it's in the senior girls' age division. Clarke, which has a long, storied and successful past in high school volleyball at every level, embarks on another venture for a provincial gold medal today at the OFSAA 'A' championships. Clarke is the number one-ranked team in the pre-tournament seed- ings, as round robin play begins today today at St. Mary's in Stratford. Two pools of six teams will play preliminary games today and tomorrow tomorrow morning, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the semi-finals later in the afternoon. afternoon. The winners will collide for the gold medal, while the losers will compete for the bronze medal. Absent is coach Lyn Lowry. ••mmiiM REGISTRATIONS AND TRY-OUTS -- As we did last week, we direct your attention to the numerous ads on today's sports pages that alert parents and players about upcoming registrations and tty-outs for summer sports programs taking place in the municipality. Registering on the first available date accomplishes two things for everyone. For the volunteers, early registration means they can proceed with scheduling and a number of other matters if they know how many kids will be participating. For the kids, early registration ensures them a spot in the program. Coach Takes Issue With ÔMHA Ruling of my respect for the players and parents of players on my team, I will do my best to continue on in any further games or actions they may pursue. Believe me, Brad, if Don Luxton or myself had known our team could be jeopardized by our actions through suspensions, we would have made sure it did not happen. I would , like to thank BMHA president Paul Jackman, and anyone else who has been involved in ongoing ongoing talks with the OMHA, for their, hard work and belief in us. It is my firm belief that the best team is not going to represent the York-Simcoe League in quest of the All-Ontario championship. I firmly believe the Bowmanville Toros are the only team in this league that would stand a chance against Triple 'A' teams in the finals. finals. In closing, I would like to thank all the supporters of our team, and, most of all, the players and families for their support and understanding in a very difficult time for manager Don Luxton and myself. Believe me, the fight has just begun. Thank you. Yours in sport, Robert "Moose" Luxton Coach, St. Marys Cement Juveniles Dear Mr. Kelly I would like, at this time, to publicly publicly apologize to the supporters and parents, but most importantly to the players of the SL Marys Cement Juvenile Toros hockey team. As you are by now, aware, the OMHA, in its ultimate wisdom, elected to accept the protest filed by the Barrie Juvenile hockey club regarding regarding a suspension I was told I received received after game five of the Ontario Ontario quarter-final series. i , .. : Believing I was. to sit out only one game, I did so. I was later informed informed by the OMHA that I was to have been suspended for two games. If manager Don Luxton or myself had been aware of this, I would never never have been on the bench for the seventh and deciding game of the series. Mistakes were made by the OMHA officials, who are the only ones paid in minor hockey to do a certain job. Yet, the OMHA executive executive decided to back its so-called officials officials and suspended my team from further OMHA playdowns. I have also been informed I will have to serve a seven-game suspension suspension for an infraction I knew nothing nothing about. I find it difficult to handle the OMHA's decision. But, because Clarington Girls' Slo-Pitch Registration to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday March 22 and 23 in the Bowmanville Recreation Centre 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Fee: $65.00 includes team sweater and photo package Novice - 7 to 9 years Midget - 13 to 15 years Pee Wee -10 to 12 years Bantam - 16 and over For more Information, call Jim Hancock at 987-3081 or Mary-Lou Kondrachuk at 623-4667 Lyn Lowry, who guided the senior senior boys' team to a gold medal in the fall, will be searching for his second OFSAA medal. To his knowledge, he would become the first high school coach to ever win a medal with both a boys' and girls' team at the OFSAA level. "If we have an Achilles heel, it will be our experience," said Lowry. Lowry. "The number one seed also puts more pressure on the kids than they really need." Though short on experience, this team is long on talent Four members members of the team - Kate McKelvie, Piquette Staples, Jill Rypstra and Joanna Van Dyke - played for the Regional team at the Ontario Summer Summer Games, where they won a silver medal. A number of the girls also play on the Ganaraska Wolves club volleyball volleyball teams. Clarke easily advanced through the South Kawartha and COS SA ; playoffs this year.. They also tacked ; on... tournament .. championships aj,, Pickering and Dunbarton. AA? Their overall match record rests at 110-10. r Deservedly, they are ranked number one. "They are so young, that's the big thing," said Lowry. "This team is made up primarily of grade tens and elevens." It's the second year in a row that Clarke qualified for the OFSAA championships. Last year, they finished finished a disappointing eighth. "We have to just play the games like a regular tournament and not think about winning a medal," said Lowry of the team's strategy. "We just have to play our game and not worry about our opponent." Lowry isn't familiar with the other other teams in the tournament, but noted noted that the defending champions from Gananoque are not entered this year. 1. Buy the cars your neighbours help to build. fm'll f M by Ted Denny Cowan Pontiac-Buick The air bag is designed to supplement the protection offered by safely bells. In the case of a severe frontal or near frontal crash, sensors in the car trigger the inflator module causing causing the air bag to inflate. The air bag inflates in less than l/20th of a second. As the driver comes in contact contact with the bag a harmless nitrogen gas is vented out through openings in the bag, thus helping to cushion the impact. The whole inflntion/dcfin- lion cycle happens in the time it lakes to blink your eye, and in most cases the bag will not obstruct visibility. The bag can very quickly and easily be pushed down and out of the way. Air bags save lives because in the case of a frontal or near frontal frontal collision the vehicle begins to stop when the impact occurs, but the occupants continue to move forward. If the occupant is not wearing wearing a scat belt, they will be stopped by the windshield, the instrument panel or die steering wheel.
