» 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 6,1994 Section Two For Your Information Big Birdwatch Starts on June 4th Flag Raising Marks Start of Cancer Society Campaign The first annual Metropolitan Toronto Toronto and Region Big Birdwatch will be held during a 24-hour period on Saturday, June 4, from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Birdwatching is one of North America's fastest growing recreational recreational activities - and by that we don't mean watching the Blue Jays! The Big Birdwatch will be open to everyone, from hard-core birders to novices. It will take place on designated designated Authority lands in Metro parks. The Metropolitan Toronto and Region Region Conservation Authority is organizing organizing the event. This year's co-hosts are the West Humber Naturalists. The Big Birdwatch will raise funds for the acquisition and protection protection of grcenspacc. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Charles Sauriol Environmental Trust Fund. This is a wonderful opportunity opportunity to collect useful information on breeding bird activity and to promote conservation lands and Metro parks as excellent bird habitat. Culminating the. event, there will be an awards ceremony at the Kort- right Centre for Conservation on Sunday, Sunday, June 5, at 5 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to teams recording the high est number of species and the highest number of provincially rare breeding birds. Teams (of no more than four people) can register until May 15, by calling (416) 661-6600, ext. 352. Jewell is currently currently Executive Director of the Council Fire Native Cultural Centre, a multi-service, drop-in centre serving serving Toronto's aboriginal community. CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY Members of the Cancer Society raised their organization's flag at the Town Hall in Bowmanville on Thursday, March 31, to mark the start of the April fund-raising drive for the Cancer Society. Volunteers have a target of $79,000 in Clarington and door-to-door canvassing will take place throughout the month. Secretary. HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTS "SHOW AND TELL" - Show and tell will be the focus of the Newcastle Historical Society General Meeting. It features D.J. radio personality, Brian Master and even a special appearance by Elvis himself. (Or, perhaps an Elvis look-alike!) The price is subsidized by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy. They are being made available to help promote waste reduction. On Saturday, April 9, the . composters will be sold and demonstrated at Rekkers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be a free composting workshop and fee composting information provided throughout the day. PHILHARMONIC CHOIR PERFORMS APRIL 10 - The Durham Philharmonic Choir presents the second concert of its inaugural season on Sunday, April 10th, at eight p.m. The performance takes place at the Harmony United Church in Oshawa. The Durham Flute Quartet will be the special guest musicians. Under the direction of Robert Phillips, the choir consists of 45 mixed voices from the Durham Region. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. ARTHRITIS AQUATIC REGISTRATION - Registration is currently under way for the Arthritis Aquatic program to take place at the Fitness Centre pool in Bowmanville. Classes will be held Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:30, beginning April 14. The classes run a total of ten weeks. This program provides the benefits of warm water exercise as well as the opportunity to meet other people with arthritis. The warmth, buoyancy and resistance of the water can help decrease pain and/or stiffness as well as improving or maintaining joint flexibility and muscle strength. The popular barbershop group is organizing two special events. On Mother's Day, May 8th, five quartets have offered their musical talent to present singing Mom-Q : Grams to moms throughout the Durham Region. By registering in advance, you can arrange to have a quartet serenade Mother at her doorstep. They'll sing two songs, and bring gifts which include a rose, chocolates and a card. BAHAULLAH - Members of the local Baha'i community urge television viewers to watch a documentary on the Baha'i faith which will be aired on Vision TV (Rogers Cable 24).
