The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, April 9,1994 9 Halminen Homes Bantams Finish Season in Thornhill The Bowmanville Toro Major Bantams, sponsored by Halminen Homes, wound up their 1993/94 season season at the 14th Annual Jerry Jacobs Memorial Tournament in Thornhill. The team were placed in a division division with their old rivals, Markham, the Mississauga Braves of the M.T.H.L, and a team from Teness- ee, U.S.A. In their first game together in over two weeks, the boys came out flat against Markham and gave up three goals in under five minutes. They then began to settle down and managed managed to put together some scoring chances while keeping Markham from any further scoring. The Toros finally managed to break the shutout with 30 seconds left when Matt Staley Staley scored from Adam Millar and Derek Arnold. In their second game they again let the opposition, this time Mississauga, Mississauga, take the lead early in the game and had to try to fight back. They scored just before the end of the first period to make it 2-1 going into the second period. Again it was Staley from Millar and Arnold. The Braves scored twice more in the third period to make the final score 4-1. Having already been eliminated going into the game against Tennessee, Tennessee, and with them also out of the tournament, all that was left was to play out the season and hope to go out on a winning note. Things did not get off to a good start as team south scored a controversial controversial goal after only 25 seconds. Try as they might, the Toros could not break down the opposition's defence defence in the first period, but in the second, they found the back of the net three times to win the game by a score of 3-1. Scoring for the Toros were Ryan Dunnigan, Darryl Cook and Matt Staley. Drawing assists were Tony Butzer, Ryan Jobb, Craig Schumacher, Adam Millar and Derek Arnold. The parents would like to thank the boys for a fine season of entertaining entertaining and competitive hockey, as well as the coaching staff of Darryl Staley, Gary Bray, Ted Lintner, Rick Gray and Frank Sawyer who gave their time to the boys. Also a thank you to the team sponsor, Halminen Homes. The continuing deterioration of the Canadian economy has dictated a schedule change in Canada for ACT's Touring Late Model Series. The schedule has been revised and five tour events in Canada have been eliminated. The tracks include Cayuga and Mosport International Speedway in Ontario; the Circuit St. Eustache in Quebec; Scotia Speed- world and New Brunswick International International Speedway in the Maritimes. Quebec's 1.3 km Sanair Super Speedway, a favorite with the competitors, competitors, will host the only Canadian Tour race this season. An additional race on Saturday, July 23, has been added to New York's Airborne International International Raceway to bring ACT's 1994 tour schedule to 16 events. In addition to the long-time tour racing, ACT has developed a more cost-efficient Regional Racing concept. concept. Regions had been established in Maine and throughout New Hampshire, Vermont and eastern New York. These 100 lap events, for Late Model competitors, offer six race meets in each of the areas. In order to fill the void created by the withdrawal of Canadian Tour events, a third region has been established established in Canada for the 1994 season. Several of the formér tour dates have been converted to Canadian Regional Series events, and with the addition of other venues, a six-race Canadian Regional schedule has been confirmed. Mosport International Speedway will be the flagship track for the Canadian Canadian Regional Series, hosting events on May 22, July 10, and August August 20. Other tracks participating include the Circuit St-Eustache outside outside of Montreal, Que; Capital City Speedway ' near Ottawa; and Airborne Airborne in NY'. "With the exchange rates becoming becoming prohibitive and an additional 17% in provincial and federal taxes, the Canadian promoters were carrying carrying too much risk," ACT president Tom Curley said. "We thought long and hard about this problem. It has been an agonizing decision for us to make. But we do feel that this is a temporary problem and that market conditions will improve," he concluded. concluded. ACT's season opens on Sunday, April 10 with the Bud 150 at New Hampshire's Lee USA Speedway, a one-third mile oval. The series moves to Oxford Plains Speedway one week later for the Diet Coke 150.
