10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 13,1994 From Local Taxidermist to Television Italo Labignan Casts a Positive Image There was a time when customers would pass through Italo Labignan's taxidermy business located located in Newcastle to have a little chat about fishing while getting their prize catch mounted. Now, some 10 years later, close to 30 million viewers from coast-to-coast in Canada and in some parts of the United States tune in to watch Labignan chat about his love for the sport on the Canadian Sportfishing show that he co-hosts. "It's an opportunity to show the rest of the world what a beautiful country we have, and what kind of fishing we have. It's a very exciting lifestyle," said Labignan to an interested group of listeners at the Liberty Pentecostal Church on Saturday night. Labignan, just back from a television shoot in the Bahamas, was relating how his popular TV show has grown over the years. He offered a few tips to the anglers, and also described how his faith has been a major influence in his life. In the 10 plus years that Labignan has been a part of Canadian Sportfishing, it has grown to 21 divisions, and employs 20 full-time staff members, members, as well as a dozen correspondents. His popular show can be seen weekly on TSN, while an extension of the show, the Canadian Canadian Sportfishing magazine, is a hot commodity on the shelf of every variety store. It's a market that is always eager for information information about the newest trends or techniques. And, according to recent statistics, it's estimated that one in every three Canadians fish, making fishing fishing one of die biggest participation sports in the country. It is one of the only sports that all family family members can participate in together, regardless regardless of age or gender. "With all of the travelling I do, I know there is definitely a lot of fishermen in Canada." In Ontario alone, there are over 400,000 lakes, said Labignan, adding: "There is no other country in the world that has as many opportunities opportunities to fish." He offered a couple of tips on how to catch fish when they are hungry, as well as how to get them interested in attacking a lure when they aren't. The secret, he says, is understanding why fish strike a particular lure or bait. "If we understood understood that, we could catch fish 100% of the time," he said. Naturally, some species of fish are easier to catch than others. The easiest, he guessed, is a barracuda. "You could take a sock off, throw it behind the boat, and they will strike it," he said with a chuckle. The biggest catch of his life -- aside from his wife, Rhonda, of 18 years - was back in second year of college at Sir Sanford Fleming. Enrolled in the Fish and Wildlife Wildlife Technician course, he was about to be interviewed for a job at a fish hatchery hatchery when another candidate candidate for the position invited he and Rhonda Rhonda over for supper. That evening, the two couples made their way to the service service at the local Pentecostal Pentecostal Church. "It was the first time I had been to church and actually listened to what was being said," he remembers. remembers. On his return home that particular evening, he recalled reading scriptures while lying in bed. It changed his life. "God poured out his grace to me in a time of my life when I was scared," he recalled. recalled. "Through his grace, it changed my life." It is ironic that, to some anglers, Labignan's Labignan's Canadian Sportfishing Sportfishing television show is considered Sport Thoughts by Brad Kelly the gospel of the sport. He, too, has changed the lives of many who seek his advice and tips each week. Jr mm III i|i Ï : P • % | "Is it time your insurance program had a check-up?" □ your residence? Q your job? CFLRI: The Researchers in Active Living For many diabetics, exercise can work wonders, just like it does in nondiabetics. It can provide a general sense of well-being and help to prevent cardiovascular disease. To understand how exercise exercise works in diabetes, we must first understand the mystery of sweetness. sweetness. Generally, untreated diabetics have high levels of sugar (or glucose) in the blood. In a normal body, extra blood sugar is absorbed into other tissues, such as muscle cells. A fine-tuned mechanism helps to keep enough sugar in the blood to nourish the brain while removing any surplus sugar. This mechanism is defective in people with diabetes type I and II. In type I diabetes (juvenile diabetes), insulin is not produced. Insulin is essential to transport the sugar away from the blood into other tissues. These individuals must therefore take insulin injections injections to compensate. Enter exercise, which also helps to transport sugar away from the blood. People with type I diabetes are now at risk of having too much sugar removed from the blood. They must take the following precautions: • Monitor blood glucose carefully--before, carefully--before, during and after exercise. • Adjust diet and insulin dosage, with the help of a doctor. A waiting period of one to two hours after insulin injections or meals taken with insulin is recommended. This ensures that exercise does not remove blood sugar at the same lime as insulin does. It may also be necessary to reduce the dose of insulin before and after exercise. • Exercise at the same time every day to make it is easy to manage insulin and glucose levels. • Choose activities that require little intensity and duration. If you exercise longer than 30 minutes, eat carbohydrates like dextrose or chocolate every half hour. For their part, people with type II diabetes have much to gain from exercise. Type II diabetes often develops during adulthood, especially especially in obese people, those with high blood pressure and those with a family history of diabetes. Approximately 90% of all people with diabetes suffer from type II diabetes. Some type II diabetics have a low insulin production. Others, who tend to be obese, secrete enough insulin, but their muscle cells resist the action of insulin and ."refuse" to absorb surplus blood sugar. Exercise is an effective treatment treatment for type II diabetics, particularly particularly those who have no other interfering disease. It works in two ways: • by improving glucose control in individuals who have a low insulin production; • by contributing to weight reduction reduction in overweight diabetics (when combined with an appropriate appropriate diet). Weight reduction leads to an increased willingness on the part of muscle cells to respond to insulin by absorbing surplus blood glucose. The best activities for overweight overweight diabetics are those with a low intensity and longer duration-- walking, for example. In fact, low- intensity activities burn off a higher percentage of fat than high-intensity high-intensity ones! All you need to do to burn off as many calories is exercise longer. Exercise is also effective in preventing diabetes. Individuals at risk of developing diabetes have a lot to gain from making a habit of a regular, enjoyable exercise. Ci/dtfel/Hty. Agreement Sought To Upgrade Park Clarington Council and the Kendal Kendal Recreation Association arc hopeful that an agreement can be reached that would sec upgrades approved approved for Harvey Jackson Memorial Memorial Park. In late 1993, the Kendal Eagles senior baseball team requested that council approve and share in the cost of a new building for the park located on Regional Road 18. Plans for the structure included washrooms, washrooms, running water, a canteen, storage area, and the possibility of change rooms. Site meetings between the Community Community Services Department and members of Uic Kendal Athletic Association Association helped devise a plan to supply a reliable water source to the park. The cost of drilling a new well would be in excess of $5,000, which was determined to be too high a price. The possibility was discussed of utilizing die well dial is located at the former Kendal Public School. The cost of the required hook-up to the nearby water source was estimated estimated at $2,200.
