The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, April 13,1994 15 A guide to fine dining and entertainment. Worldwide Participation in Cleanup Campaign The Canadian participants in Pitch-In Week were among 30 million million people who helped clean up the world as part of a United Nations sponsored environmental cleanup campaign held in 1993. People everywhere threw themselves themselves into ridding their communities of the cast-offs of modem life - discarded discarded household junk, abandoned packaging, car carcasses, mountains of cigarette fdters and all the debris heedlessly dumped by a throw-away society. "It was obvious that people across the world care about their environment," environment," said Allard van Veen, Canada's Canada's National Coordinator of the Campaign which attracted participants participants from 79 countries. Compared to elsewhere, participation participation in Canada's Campaign was widespread, with projects taking place from Coast to Coast. In Ontario alone, more than one million participated participated in the project which is supported supported by the Ontario Federation of Anglers Anglers and Hunters in cooperation with PITCHJN CANADA. The campaign touched a nerve in people from every walk of life, every social economic group, every age group and culture. In every community community which participated, the people demonstrated enthusiasm and a belief in the project. They threw all their energies into the Campaign and were well organized, attracting publicity and media interest from local press, radio and television. The international project, like PITCH-IN WEEK, has a short-term goal of creating an immediate cleaner environment. Its long-term aim is to use the event to highlight the issues behind the Campaign and to stimulate stimulate environmental awareness and education. education. Whereas PITCH-IN CANADA coordinated the National PITCH-IN Campaign, the International Campaign Campaign headquarters in Sidney, Australia Australia kept track of worldwide activities. The Government supplied economic, organizational organizational and human resources su- port and 3.4 million Chinese participated participated in community cleanups at 112 different sites.
