Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 13,1994 5 Clubs and Organizations New Show at Visual Arts Centre Features Rental Paintings The first meeting of the Durham Junior Dairy Club was held in Bow- manvillc at the Baseline Community Centre at 8:00 p.m. on April 5,1994. The leaders for our club this year arc Mr. Ed Henderson and Mr. Peter Luckhardt. Mr. Henderson gave us a brief outline of what we would be covering in this club. The topic for this year's club is Health and Breeding. Breeding. He also told us what we needed to know about choosing our calf. We then had the election of officers. officers. Next, we chose the Judging Teams for the club. The teams are - Junior Team - Liz Millson, Mike Metcalf, Paul Millson. Senior Team - Kim Metcalf, Paula Pascoc, Aaron Bowman. Last, but not least to be chosen was the "Go For The Gold" team. Junior Team - Tom Tamblyn, Stephanie Robinson, Ross Millson, Liz Millson. Senior Team - Carolyn Barkcy, Kim Metcalf, Kathryn Barkcy, Brian Warren. Following the election, Mr. Henderson Henderson told us that the next meeting was going to be held at Eric Bowman's, Bowman's, Enniskillen. Michelle Michelle Robichaud, who is now enrolled enrolled in a Legal Secretarial Course at the Toronto School of Business, was the recipient. Pam Jackson, a member of the Ontario Advisory Council on Women's Women's Issues, then proceeded to brief those in attendance about the Council's Council's goals and achievements. The mandate of the Council is to listen to the concerns of the people and report back to government. Ms. Jackson, the representative for the Central Ontario region, was one of 15 selected last year for the Council. This is the first time members members were appointed by nominations from women and women's groups. The council has compiled an action action statement to help achieve its objectives. objectives. It specialized in talking to women's groups and work towards better understanding of government issues by the general public. Ms. Jackson referred to the Council as being being a pipeline for people on their concerns. concerns. Bowmanville Toastmaster Chairs Division Speech Contest Congratulations to Distinguished Toastmaster Connie Nelson who organized organized and chaired the Eastern division division speech contest hosted by the Oshawa Toastmasters on Wednesday March 30, 1994. This contest drew participants and their supporters from the entire division which stretches from Kingston to Pickering and north to Lindsay and Peterborough. The contest was a sterling example of both quality and quantity. Eighteen competitors in three separate separate contests demonstrated excellence. excellence. The varied and vital speech of our guest speaker, Karen Elliott, provided provided a stiff challenge to the evaluation evaluation hopefuls. It was unanimously agreed by the standing-room-only crowd that this was the biggest and best division contest that Eastern Division Division has ever held. As Eastern division governor, Distinguished Distinguished Toastmaster Connie Nelson, Nelson, offers support and encouragement encouragement to all Toastmaster Clubs and their members. One of the division governor's responsibilities is to give members the opportunity to enhance their skills at division speaking contests contests twice a year. The division consists of eleven Junior Dairy Club Members Hold Meeting in April Clubs which the division governor visits at least once per term. It is also the division governor's responsibility to provide and arrange executives in June and further training training mid year. Distinguished Toastmaster Toastmaster Connie Nelson thanked everyone everyone for their dedicated support not only of the contest but also throughout throughout the year. Ms. Jackson highlighted the importance importance of the maths and sciences in the curriculum for girls' education. She said the emphasis needs to be directed directed to activities such as walking etc. rather than strictly competitive sports. In addition, she feels the schools should be utilized more outside outside school hours for different activities activities and organizations. As well, Ms. Jackson referred to child care, which is still considered a women's issue. In conclusion, she stressed that women have to make themselves heard - "We need to make more noise". This months meeting will be held on Thursday, April 21st. At this meeting there will be discussions about the resolutions to be presented at the 1994 provincial conference being being held on May 27-29 in Windsor. Some of the issues to be discussed are - Violence Against Women, Funding for Housing for Disabled Women and Program for Children with Special Needs. The club meetings are open to women working in all different fields and are a valuable opportunity to work collectively towards achieving women's advancement. A show currently underway features the 16 artists participating in the program program which is available to both private home-owners and businesses or corporations looking for original paintings, prints and photographs to brighten their surroundings.
