GOLF COURSE SEASON OPENING Saturday, April 16th Take advantage of our OPENING SPECIALS Rates: Weekdays 9 Holes $9.00 18 Holes $14.50 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 13,1994 7 by Brad Kelly When can a team celebrate, despite despite coming up just short in its quest for an All-Ontario championship? championship? When the team is the Orono Family Auto atoms. It has been 10 long years since Orono landed a team in an OMHA Ontario final series. And though they failed to knock off the defending defending provincial champions from Thedford, the team's accomplishments accomplishments over the year, and especially their incredible playoff run, gave the entire town reason to celebrate. Facing a 5-1 points deficit in the six-point series, Orono needed a pair of victories in Thedford this past weekend to force a sixth and deciding game back in Orono. With all the reason in the world to quit and be satisfied with their accomplishments accomplishments this past year, Orono came within minutes of extending the series. On Saturday afternoon, Orono burst out of the gate with three goals in the opening period and coasted to a 5-2 victory. And on Sunday, they appeared headed for an overtime victory after scoring twice early in the extra frame to move ahead 4-2. But four unanswered goals by Thedford in the final half of the extra period gave them a 64 win and, with it, the Atom 'E' Ontario title. "The kids got those two goals and thought the game was over," said coach John Witheridge. "So, it was a good learning experience for them that a game is never over. "Although I must admit, I couldn't believe Thedford could score four goals that quickly." Bobby Witheridge had a pair of goals in Sunday's game. His first of the afternoon came with only 1:48 left in regulation time, tieing the game at 2-2. Tyler Robinson and Brandon Kcttela had the others. Matt McGlynn with two, Mike Knox and Witheridge had assists. "We really felt we could have won that game," said Witheridge. "I hate to do. any second-guessing, but if something would have happened happened to stop those four goals, I'm confident we would have (come back to win the series)." Facing elimination on Saturday, Orono came up with a spirited effort, effort, claiming a 5-2 victory. Greg Shetler, Witheridge, McGlynn, Ket- tcla and Robinson tallied one apiece. Jeff Thompson, Pat O'Halloran, Witheridge (2), Robinson (2), Jamie Parry and McGlynn picked up assists. assists. "I was convinced we were going to win that game on Saturday. There was no doubt in my mind," said Witheridge. The community was very supportive supportive of the efforts of this young team. Many from the town made the Triple F Bowling over three-hour trip to take in the games on the weekend. Even the Orono Orphans champi-. onship team of the 1940's lent support, support, sending a card signed by the players of the team along for a little inspiration. "We were overwhelmed with die support," said Witheridge of the gesture. Sunday's loss brought to an end a ; very long, but successful, playoff i run for Orono. To reach the finals, ;• they had to beat McTeer, Tamworth, >' Ops and Woodstock. i The Orono Family Auto Atoms put up a valiant effort but came up just short in their bid for an All- Ontario championship this past weekend. Thedford, who were the defending provincial champions, won the series seven points to three. ' On Saturday, April 2, the Checkers Checkers Variety Peewee team continued its BRHL playoffs with an exciting game against Dykstra's. Gerrit Van Dyke (who returned to the lineup after being off eight weeks with a fractured leg) had several several good chances in front of the net in the first period. But it was A1 Robb who fired it home, with the assist assist going to the hard-working Jeff Collins. In the second period, Ryan Wood tied the game at two, with the set-up going to Jeff Lee. | vf Checkers then fell behind in the third, but Ryan Wood fired in a goal to make it close. Final score was Dykstra's 5, Checkers 3. On Monday, April 4, Checkers suited up against Rolph Novico at the Orono Arena. In this game, we welcomed back Kevin Stonehouse who had been sidelined for six weeks with a broken broken collarbone. Kevin immediately made his presence felt with a perfect slapshot from the blueline to make it 1-0. Checkers completely dominated the first two periods, but couldn't get the puck past Novico's Bob Lloyd. Final score was Rolph Novico 3, Checkers 1.
