John McDermott Comes to Lindsay Far too often we hear about the greed and disillusions of veterans of the "backstabbing" entertainment industry industry - making it all the more refreshing refreshing to come across John McDermott, McDermott, who thoroughly enjoys singing and clearly loves to perform! McDermott, appearing at the Academy Theatre on April 15, decided decided in 1992 to record several old Scottish Scottish ballads for his parents' 50th wedding wedding anniversary. Much to his amazement, many more than just the McDermott family considered these tunes favourites, and within one year, Danny Boy went platinum. After much soul-searching and discussion, McDermott signed a recording contract, contract, quit his "day job" with the newspaper and set out to pursue a musical career - other than singing the national anthem for the Maple Leafs' home games, that is. And now, after touring in support of his first recording and recently re-' leasing a second, Old Friends, does he have any regrets about his decision? decision? "Not a bit", replies McDermott emphatically from his Toronto home. "This is absolutely fabulous. It's like being paid to play golf, and I love to play golf." On this tour, which runs until July, the superb band behind McDermott's McDermott's crystalline tenor voice includes includes the Halifax-based duo, Evans and Doherty - who many will remem ber from the 1992 Liam Clancy tour, the 1994 East Coast Music Award winning fiddle player Natalie Mac- Master, with Bill Bridges on guitar and Tracy Dares on piano. "We're really looking forward to these dates" says John McDermott. "Oh, and I'll take requests. If we know them, we'll sing them." Then there's a little pause, a soft chuckle, and McDermott continues, "Even if we don't, we'll do 'em anyway!" John McDermott performs at the Academy Theatre, on Friday, April 15, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available from the Theatre Box Office, 324- 9111.
