8 The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, April 16,1994 Quiz for Pony Club Members On Sunday, April 17, members of our local Pony Club will compete at the Central Ontario Region Quiz at Ajax High School. The Victoria Pony Club, with members from this area, will compete against teams from most other Central Ontario branches. Twenty-one of the 33 branches have entered, with late entries still coming in. Pony Club is an international movement for children aged 21 or under. It offers a variety of horse- related activities and competitions. In 1994, Canadian Pony Club celebrates its 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee. Jubilee. There are usually games that teams can play to fill time between phases. Two of this year's games are equestrian versions of "Jeopardy" and "Win Lose or Draw." Behind in the series four points to one, Orono faced-off for game four up in Thedford on Saturday, April 9, and surprised the Thunder with a 5-2 drubbing. Family Auto came out flying as they built up a 3-0 lead after the first period, and led 3-1 after two. Orono never looked back as they outscored Thedford 2-1 in the final frame as well. This was to be their best game of the series. Thedford hosted game five Sunday, Sunday, April 10 to a capacity crowd. The Thunder grabbed an early 2-0 lead that stood up until the third period. period. Orono fought back with a goal midway through the frame with less than two minutes remaining, Family Auto silenced the boisterous hometown hometown crowd with the equalizer forcing forcing the second ten minute overtime period of the series. Both clubs battled ferociously, with the two teams scoring no less then six goals, sending the crowd into an emotional roller coaster ride for the final ten minutes of the season. Orono was six minutes and fifty- four seconds away from forcing a game six in the series on home turf as they jumped ahead by a 4-2 score! However, as he'd done throughout the playoffs, Thedford's Jamie Johnson Johnson did not disappoint his hometown fans as he orchestrated four straight goals in the last six minutes of the game, giving the Thunder a 6-4 victory victory and the Ontario Championship. Ice Shavings: In retrospect, our boys played their hearts out in the Thedford series. Particularly those first four minutes of game five's overtime when they reached down deep and thrilled us just one more time with the hopes of yet another game. They were running on empty and it showed as they succumbed to a club that was just a little more experienced experienced in championship matters, repeating repeating last year's feat...it was a learning experience for our boys and judging by the smiling and joking faces and pride exhibited as they were honored at the Bowmanville Arena during the Junior C playoff match, it will indeed be a short five months before the puck is dropped on a new hockey season and this time they will be ready!...Still dwelling on that Thedford series, what a nice touch for the boys between periods in game four as coach John Witheridge read words of encouragement and inspiration inspiration from a card written and signed by members of the 1948-49 Orono Orphans Champions Hockey team!...thanks to the additional 36 Orono fans who made the long trek to Thedford Sunday morning in a convoy of stretch limousines!...since the boys' hockey season is over, coaches Dave McGlynn and Peter Landers arc now able to compete in an Ottawa Men's Tournament this weekend. We wish them good luck!...Since the season has official ly wound down, on behalf of the parents parents and players, I'd like to thank the coaches Dave McGlynn, Peter Witheridge, Witheridge, and all those who contributed and supported the boys for providing such a successful and entertaining season! A special thanks goes out to Stan Gylytuik for his unwavering support, and to the boys themselves: Ryan L., Ryan T., Scott, Bob, Brandon Brandon B., Brandon C., Greg S., Greg B., Jamie, Mike, Tyler, Jeff, Matt, Paul, and Pat.
