The Newcastle resident just recently recently returned from a two-week stint in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he officiated games at the World Senior 'B' Pool Hockey Championships. With a favourable recommendation recommendation from supervisors at the tournament, tournament, Houston hopes that he will once again be selected to represent Canada at an international tournament. tournament. Most preferable would be the 'A' Pool Championships, or perhaps, even an Olympics. "It would be an honour to go anywhere," he admitted. "Another trip would be the second chance of a lifetime." The World *B' Pool Championships Championships included eight countries playing playing a round-robin format tournament tournament to declare a champion. Switzerland, with a 2-1 victory over Latvia on the final day, emerged as the overall winners. Next year, they will swap places with the last place team at this year's 'A' Pool championship tournament, tournament, which is currently underway underway in Italy. Poland finished the 'B' Pool championship in third place, followed followed by Japan and the host team from Denmark. The Netherlands, Romania and China rounded out the eight-country tournament. China, who failed to register a point in their seven games, were by far the weakest team of the tournament. tournament. They suffered a 22-0 loss to Latvia, a 20-1 pounding from Switzerland, Switzerland, and a 15-2 setback to Poland. Poland. During the four games Houston refereed, one of the assignments he was selected for involved the woeful team from China. "I was told on the way over that I was going tu get the China and Japan Japan game because they figured it would turn into a riot," said Houston. Houston. "I hit them hard with penalties in the first period, and they played hockey after that." Outside of games involving the host team from Denmark, the tournament tournament drew little interest in terms of fan support. A game between Denmark and Poland would draw 5,500 to the local rink, while the following following day, a sparse crowd of only 25 would bother to attend a game between two other countries. Aside from China and Romania, who iced very weak teams, Houston compared the level of play of some of the other countries as equivalent to that of Junior hockey here in Canada. Canada. "The good clubs would be comparable comparable to Major 'A' hockey, while the weaker ones left a little to be desired." desired." The tournament also served as an evaluation camp for the officials, who represented countries from all over the world. The referees and linesman were put through a series of drills under the watchful eyes of supervisors. Those results will be used when selecting officials for future future international events. The assignment at the World 'B' ; Championships is the culmination ; of 20 years of dedication to the sport * of hockey as an official for Houston. ! Only a very select few in Canada have achieved that status. Which is why his selection to referee referee in Denmark was deserving. He now hopes that another opportunity, will come his way. "Now that I've been seen, my name is out there and they know who I am on the international level," level," said Houston of the difficulty involved in getting recognized at that elite level. "Every game was supervised; and recommendations are made from those reports. I hope every; thing went well." -, Supervisors did provide him with some insight, expressing that he wouldn't have any problem moving up a level to officiate games in the 'A' Pool. ' For Houston, that is encouraging news. ,i Jim Houston recently returned from Copenhagen, Denmark, where he was selected to referee in tlje World Senior 'B' Pool Hockey Championships. The Newcastle resident refereed four games of the round robin tournament, which was won by Switzerland. Above, he shows some concern for an injurocl player during a recent Jr. C playoff game between Bowmanville and Rockton. " WHY PAY MORE?
