Many things are happening. happening. With less than two months of school left, teachers are figuring out how to fit in all the information that they have yet to teach. Durham's baby boom seems to be over. Mrs. Touw and her daughter Mystaya, though off to a rough start, are doing fme now. Last week, Mr. Ewald brought his new daughter in for a Family Studies class. Melanie Vandergaast, a grade twelve student at Durham, will be going going to OFSAA, a badminton tournament. tournament. She will be up against a DCHS former champion, Gena Jaspers- Fayer, who is taking her OACs at Bowmanville High. A current champion champion meets the former champion - should be an interesting match! The senior wind ensemble will be going on tour later this week. They will be travelling around New York State. This is a much anticipated event, and a lot of planning has gone into it. A report will follow on how it all went and students' reactions. The theatre arts class is going to see a play this week in St. Stephen's high school. Next year's registration forms are out now and everyone's busy planning planning out their courses for the fall. Some new courses will be offered, in- ' eluding Creative Writing. Mrs. Hiem- stra, who will be teaching the course, is very excited about it. She says that students will spend the whole year just writing, not taking notes or anything anything else. She hopes to get some authors authors and poets to come in and discuss discuss writing with the students. Durham's choir has been busy lately. They attended the Kiwanis festival yesterday and came in first place, competing against several area school choirs. This Friday, they are going to a choir festival with other Christian Schools' choirs. This will be a P.D .Day for the rest of the students. students. Congratulations to Mrs. Touw, our former English and Theatre teacher, and her husband Harry. Their first child, a daughter, was bom on April 12. They named her Mystaya Mystaya Lynn. Mrs. Touw took her maternity maternity leave a few months ago. Nine grade eleven and twelve students students recently competed in an academic academic decathlon. They were competing competing against twelve other teams from across Canada. Each student had to write tests in physics, math, biology, chemistry, literature, social sciences, art, and music. They also had to give a prepared speech in front of a panel of judges, and an impromptu speech. The final test was a team event on the subject of "documents of freedom". Although Durham didn't win any trophies, trophies, the students represented the school well and did a really great job. Thanks to the students who participated. participated. The Peterborough chapter of DCHS is hosting its annual Dinner Theatre next month, also featuring Durham's Jazz Band. This has been a successful and profitable event in the past, as well as a fun evening for all. The Waverley Public School Junior Choir presented a half-hour concert to top off the school's activity activity night on Tuesday, May 3. Among the selections were songs from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Technicolor Dreamcoat and "Make a Rainbow." It was this last song which the students were performing when our photographer snapped this picture.
