What is heartworm anyway? Why should I worry about it? How are dogs infected? infected? What are the signs? Are only dogs at risk, what about my cat? Is it treatable? Is it preventable? Heartworm is a parasitic disease of dogs. It can infect cats and other species but only rarely. In Ontario, only the dog is at significant risk. Last year in Ontario there were 254 dogs with heartworm disease. Most of these were in western Ontario. Locally Locally there were dogs in Oshawa, Ajax, Cobourg, Peterborough and Toronto. To date, this spring, there have have been two positive cases of heartworm disease found in Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Heartworm disease has been reported to be present in the wild canine population ie, coyotes, wolves. Heartworms are approximately, 8 to 12 inches long. They live in the right side of the heart and are constantly constantly bathed by the dog's blood from which they obtain nourishment. There are male and female worms. They reproduce in the dog and release release microfilariae (baby worms) into the dog's blood stream. * Heartworm is transmitted to dogs through the bite of a mosquito that has been infected by biting an already already infected dog. When it bites another another dog, they are transferred to the new dog. There they migrate to the heart, mature, and start the process over again. As local produce comes into season, much of it will end up at the Oshawa Centre Farmer's Market, to the delight of loyal customers. This market has been around for some thirty years and many of the merchants will claim they are the originals? The market is a Stevenson Rd., and Gibb St. The Port Perry Market opens June 11th and runs to October 1st. At the Port Perry Fair Grounds, every Saturday Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the vendors vendors offer foods, baked goods, fresh produce and herbs, along with crafts such as weaving and smocking. Egg grading demonstrations are popular, as are the fresh eggs. Sausage on a bun, with local home-made sausage is a favourite nosh while shopping. Uxbridge Farmers Market opens May 29th and runs every Sunday until until October 30th. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the market is located at Highway 47 and Brock Street in Uxbridge. The season kicks off May 29th with entertainment, something for the kids and the vendors will have plenty to offer, including early lettuce, asparagus and herbs. In addition to fresh produce and baked goods, Uxbridge Uxbridge market features Maple syrup, cider, live trout and bedding plants. Special celebrations throughout the season include a strawberry festival festival with jam making demonstrations; Christmas in July with rum pot making; making; quilting and spinning demonstrations demonstrations in August to celebrate Steam Threshing Days and September brings Celebration of the Arts where artists capture the market scene. The season winds down with a Halloween Pumpkin Carving contest. It's entitled "AU I Needed to Know I Learned from the School Custodian." The story is told through music, sound effects, puppets and live performers. The JAM group takes its children's children's shows to a variety of settings, including parks, fairs, festivals and churches. Treatment is much more successful if done early before clinical signs of infection develop. develop. Prevention for heartworm is available available and inexpensive. Prevention is a good idea. Preventable medication is usually given from June to November. November. You should consult with your veterinarian for information on this. Your dog can be tested for heart- worm. A small blood sample is required required to test for the presence of microfilariae. microfilariae. This can be done by your veterinarian in the office. Early detection detection makes treatment easier and more successful. A negative test is essential before placing your dog on preventative medication. Your dog can be tested for heart- worm at any time. In our area the best time to test is during the months of April through June. It takes 6 months from the time of infection until until microfilariae can be detected. The last of the mosquitoes are gone in late September, making spring the ideal testing time.
