But that is exactly what transpired transpired as the municipality's two senior senior baseball teams clashed in an Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Association league game played on Victoria Day at Harvey Jackson Memorial Park in Kendal. On the scoreboard, it was the Kendal Quantrill Chev-Olds Eagles who celebrated victory by eking out a narrow 10-9 win. But it was the Bowmanville Langley Utility Falcons who were more impressed with the end result. Failing to post a win in their first four league games, Bowmanville found themselves trailing by scores of 6-1 and 8-2 in Monday's game. But five runs in the eighth inning, and two more in the ninth almost vaulted them to their first win. "We had no reason to quit today," today," said Bowmanville coach Ron Cormier, who was visibly pleased with his team's effort. Kendal looked comfortably ahead in the game, carrying an 8-2 lead into the eighth inning behind the strong pitching debut of Cory Baker, who had played the past couple of seasons in Cobourg. But in the eighth, Bowmanville sent nine batters to the plate, cashing cashing in five runs off Kendal reliever Gary Carroll to pull to within one at 8-7. Kendal answered with a couple of insurance runs in their half of the inning to increase their margin to 10-7. But in the ninth, reliever Chris Hall gave up a home run to Bow- manville's Ed Bird, scoring Trevor Rogers ahead of him, to narrow the lead to 10-9. Hall then recorded the last out of the game to pick up the save. "Our guys played with a little more confidence today, and have started to gel together as a team," said Cormier. "I noticed a lot of harmony on the bench, which was lacking before." Though the loss was Bowman- ville's fifth in a row to start the season, season, there were a number of encouraging encouraging signs. Especially after suffering their most embarrassing loss of the season season to date, when Port Hope mer- cied them 22-6 on Sunday evening. The win improved Kendal's record to 2-1 on the year, with both victories coming over Bowmanville. Their only loss came on Saturday afternoon when Orillia scored three runs in the ninth inning for an 8-5 victory. Mike Robinson pitched a complete-game complete-game for Kendal, striking out three and allowing 12 hits. Against Bowmanville on Monday, Monday, Baker pitched six complete innings innings to record his first victory in a Kendal uniform. The tough lefthander lefthander scattered six hits, while striking striking out four. He also showed excel lent control in his first start, issuing only one walk on the afternoon. M. Robinson had a productive day at the plate, collecting three singles singles and a double in Kendal's 16-hit attack against three Bowmanville pitchers. Brad Robinson, Keith Powell and Jerry Thompson all pitched in with two hits apiece. Kendal's big inning was the second second when they sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring five runs on five hits. Troy Foster started on the mound for Bowmanville, but was forced to leave the game with arm problems in the second inning. Jeff Bartlett replaced replaced Foster and pitched seven strong innings of relief. Tim Furness came on in the eighth inning and induced a double play to quash a Kendal rally. It was one of the most productive days at the plate that Bowmanville has enjoyed. Their offense had been sporadic prior to Monday's tilt. "Today was one of our best days for hitting," admitted Cormier. "In past games, we seemed to be hitting the ball right to a defender. But today today we sprayed the ball around a little little more." In addition to Bird's homerun, both Jeff Laird and Troy Foster collected collected a pair of hits each. In all, Bowmanville had 13 hits on the day. Bowmanville hosts Orillia at Soper Creek Park on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., and travels to Peterborough on Monday evening. Kendal returns to action this weekend when they host a pair of games at Harvey Jackson Memorial Park. Whitby will visit on Saturday, while Ajax comes in on Sunday.' First pitch for both games is 1:00 p.m. Bowmanville's Jeff Laird awaits the throw to second base as Kendal's Kendal's Mike Robinson arrives safely during early action of Monday's game. Kendal Eagles' Brad Robinson slides safely into home plate under the waiting glove of Bowmanville pitcher Jeff Bartlett during a senior EOBA league game held in Kendal on Monday afternoon. Kendal took a big lead early in the game, but had to hang on for a 10-9 victory. Watching the play at the plate unfold are Kendal's Keith Powell (#35), and umpire Dennis Knapp. BOWMANVILLE 19 Silver St. 623-4225 OSHAWA Bloor at Park SAVE !$ 50 00 on deductible of most windshield J insurance claims plus... 1 Free I Gas Bar-B-Que I Limited Time Offer i Auto Glozr 432-4642 ^SpFWHITBY - 411 Dundas St. East 434-9655 UXBRIDGE Douglas Rd. 852-5382 PORT PERRY 985-0738 LOCATIONS ALSO IN: LINDSAY PETERBOROUGH ORILLIA MINDEN Over .50,000 Satisfied Customers Since 1974
