The Independent, Canadian Statesman Weekender, Bowmanville, Saturday, May 28,1994 21 Say Goodbye to Hot Water Shower Shock ©After traffic accidents, accidents happening at home pose the greatest threat to Americans, and nowhere at home is threat of injury greater than in the shower. How do most shower injuries occur? According to the National Safety Council, most accidents accidents in the shower are the result of slip and fall incidents on wet surfaces. What causes the fall in the first place? In many cases it's the result of being subjected to a severe water temperature change, especially scalding scalding hot water. All too often, this happens happens when a competing pressure demand is made on your home's plumbing system -- when the washing washing machine is started or your dishwasher dishwasher changes cycle. "Shower Shock" is a real danger in the home, especially to the very young, the elderly and those with disabilities. disabilities. The danger of being scalded (and burned), as well as falling and being injured, are ever-present in homes not equipped with what's known as an "anti-scald" shower valve. The chances of such an incident happening to you in a hotel or even an apartment building, however, are considerably less. That's because the vast majority of commercial, institutional institutional and multi-dwelling buildings in the United States are equipped with "pressure-balancing" shower valve fittings. There are several good reasons for this: Architects and plumbers demand them; use of pressure-balancing pressure-balancing shower valves is often required by law, and even in states where it's not yet the law, their use is certainly a cheaper alternative than paying for injuries that do occur. While most states today require antiscald antiscald shower valves to be installed in hotels, hospitals and apartment buildings, buildings, an increasing number also require their installation as an important important safety prevention measure in all new single-family homes. When not required by law, many plumbers will recommend the installation of a pressure-balancing pressure-balancing shower valve whenever whenever a bathroom without one undergoes renovation. The first fully pressure-balancing shower valve was introduced in 1938 by inventor Paul Symmons, who saw Housing starts are forecast to increase increase slightly to 157,900 units this year and 166,100 units in 1995, from a level of 155,443 in 1993, reported Canada Mortgage and Housing (CMHC) in its second quarter National National Housing Outlook. "The" slight advance in new construction construction reflects better economic conditions and rising consumer confidence confidence offsetting the impact of recent increases in mortgage interest rates. Actually, the outlook calls for mortgage mortgage rates to retreat gradually from their current level," remarked Gilles Proulx, CMHC's Chief Economist. The higher level of new construction construction will come from higher starts of single-detached homes, due to more move-up buyers and a continuing flow of first-time buyers. Multiple construction is expected to hold steady because of high vacancy rates for rental apartments. Resale Market and House Prices Sales of existing homes through the Multiple Listing Service are expected expected to inch up about 3 per cent this year and next, to 311,500 and 320,000 units respectively. The average price of homes on the resale market will rise about 3 per cent this year, and 2 per cent in 1995. The increase is due to stronger , demand demand in most local markets. The 94 and '95 main factor, however, is that larger, more expensive homes will account for a growing share of transactions. Provincial Outlooks The outlook reflects the special situations of the country's different regions and their housing markets. Half of the provinces are expected to record higher starts this year. The centre of the country will outperform both coasts. Ontario housing starts should increase increase by nearly 11 per cent to 50,000 units this year, the best provincial provincial improvement. Quebec markets markets are also expected to increase for the first time since 1987, by 5 per cent to 35,700 units. In British Columbia, Columbia, there will be fewer housing starts (5 per cent less to 40,600 units) following an all time record in 1993. In the Prairie region, starts are expected expected to fall in Alberta (down nearly 10 per cent to 16,400 units). New construction, however, should increase increase in Manitoba (up 4 per cent to 2,525 units) and Saskatchewan (up around 1 per cent to 1,895 units). In the Atlantic region, only Prince Edward Island is expected to see higher new construction (up 7 per cent to 690 units).. Lower starts levels are forecast for Nova Scotia (down nearly 1 per cent to 4,250), New Brunswick (down 5 per cent to 3,500 units) and Newfoundland (down 4 per cent to 2,300 units). k A PETER KOWAL Real Estate Limited Broker 52 King St. W., Bowmanville 623-2453 SERVING BOWMANVILLE AND AREA SINCE 1V55 The Little Office That's Big on Service CORDOVA LAKE COTTAGE " : ' it ih IM MSS mi Legal Desc.
