Despite collecting only six hits on the afternoon, the Kendal Quantrill Quantrill Chev Olds Eagles managed a 4- 3 win in a nail-biter played at Harvey Harvey Jackson Memorial Park. Defensive errors by Ajax in the bottom of the eighth inning led to a pair of Kendal runs in the come- from-behind victory. But it was the pitching performance performance of Kendal starter John Robinson Robinson and reliever Cory Baker that highlighted this game. Robinson kept Ajax off balance all afternoon, throwing eight innings of five-hit ball before giving way to Baker in the ninth with a 4-3 lead. Baker allowed Ajax runners to reach second and third with two out, and fell behind in the count with three straight balls to the next batter. But the left-hander came back with three straight strikes, the last one a called third strike, to preserve the win. "Rooster (John Robinson) pitched really well today," said coach Ron Davis of the fine performance performance from his starter. "He's a good guy to pitch against that club. They are a fastball hitting team, and Rooster kept them off balance with off-speed pitches." It was the second win of the season season for Robinson, who picked up his first victory of the year against Bowmanville back on May 18. It also improved Kendal's record on the year to 3-1, with rainout games against Whitby and Little Britain to be made up. Kendal never held the lead in Sunday's game with Ajax until they pushed across two runs in the eighth inning. Trailing 3-2, Kirk Woodward scored as the result of an error on a sharply hit ball by Jim Newton to tie the game. Later in that same inning, Brad Robinson scored the go-ahead run when he scampered home from third base on a pass ball. "I was really impressed today. Everyone gave everything they had to give," said coach Davis. Kendal scored a single run in the third inning when Dwight Woodward Woodward scored from second on a double double by B. Robinson. In the fourth, Mike Robinson doubled, and later scored on an error. error. Beyond those brief flashes of offence, offence, the game was a classic pitcher's pitcher's duel. Davis is hoping that the win over Ajax will carry over into a couple of tough games, beginning tonight in Port Hope, and concluding tomorrow tomorrow night in Orillia. "To beat a team like that (Ajax)" will give us more confidence going into Port Hope. "It's a big game for me because I really enjoy playing against Port Hope. We've had so many good games and series with them over the years." Kendal's next home game is slated slated for Sunday, June 12, against Port Hope.
