Conant Chapter. Officers Welcomed at Eastern Star Meeting The Pine Ridge Haliburton District Liberal Association held a meeting in Bowmanville May 19th, at which time a slate of officers was elected. The association represents both federal and provincial ridings within the Pine Ridge and Haliburton areas. New Slate of Officers Selected for Women's B&P Club Members of the Bowmanville Business and Professional Women's Club installed a new slate of officers officers at their May 19th meeting. Roxy Barnes, who has served as president for the past two years, was honored for her work. She received a past president's pin and also a collection of club pins and mementos mementos from Greta Brown who is a former president. The incoming president is Irene Konzelmann. At 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 1994 the ladies of the Bowmanville Women's Institute met at Trinity United Church for dessert luncheon. Mrs. J. Carrigan's .group were in charge: ' • : Our new President, Vera Downey, greeted the ladies present and opened the meeting with the Institute Ode Mid the. .Mary Stewart Collect. Our giiest speaker was Glenice Issenjiown- or of the "Cheese Place" on Highway 115. Glenice presented the complete story of making various cheeses from collecting milk from the farmer to the finished product we purchase in the stores. Among the many interesting "aspects" Glenice mentioned were that the milk must be pasteurized at 162°F for 16 seconds, that 10 lbs. milk makes 1 lb cheese, that curds are weighed down over night and then stored in cold storage to cure. She warned us that freezing makes the cheese crumble. She answered many questions from the group. Betty Betty Morrison added many other interesting interesting facts about cheese: U.S.A. leads the world in cheese-making, Ontario leads in Canada. In various countries cheese is made from the milk of animals such as zebras, camels, camels, horses, goats and donkeys etc. Vera Downey thanked Ruth and her group for this informative programme, programme, • 1 Roll Call was answered with many ideas for recipes using cheeses. Correspondence was read and dis cussed. Moved by Louise Bell, seconded seconded by Bernice Puk that we continue continue the $100 Bursary to the student, in Bowmanville High School, who excels in the "Family Studies" program. program. , Discussion was held regarding ■ new suggested changes discussed for Bowmanville. Louise Bell was asked to bring this matter to the attention of the ladies at the District Annual meeting. Further to the business, Irene England England volunteered to be on Shirley Brown's Work Shop Committee. Bylaws Bylaws were read. Happy Birthday was sung for Emily Slute and Helen Mill- son. It was a lovely evening, with many members and visitors filling the hall. Making their usual warm and heartfelt welcome from the East, were the Worthy Matron, Mrs. Kay Pring and Worthy Patron, Wilson Pring. First to be made welcome, was Mrs. Autrey Martin, P.G.M. who was . escorted to the East and given Grand Honours. Grand Chapter Committee members members and District Deputy Grand Matrons Matrons were then introduced from District District 11, Mrs. Ellen Mitchell D.D. G.M. and from #19, Mrs. Marion Ross D.D .G.M., and Ken Sumers- ford, Grand Trustee. Past District Deputys were Mrs. Flora Moorefield #11, Mrs. Dorothy -Taylor'#8, and Mrs. Eleanor Jones rio, and Mrs. Eleanor Walker, representing representing Utah in Ontario. There were 31 Past Matrons and Past Patrons, 35 members from Durham Durham Chapter plus visitors. Throughout the business end of the meeting the members well agreed to this year again give the Proficiency Proficiency award to the Bowmanville High School. It was also duly noted that Mrs. ! Elmira West, P.M. and husband Fred,, P.P. had celebrated their 67th wedding wedding anniversary, as well, Fred, at age 95, had taken and passed his drivers test and was still out driving and congratulations.
