Hot Days in June Help Strawberries The recent "heat wave" to hit Durham Durham Region has pushed forward strawberry harvest projections, but we are still a little behind. Growers who are using rowcovers may have berries by this week (June 20 - 24). Strawberry fields that went "mulchless" over the winter may also be ready. "Mulchless" means that no straw was placed over the berries berries through the winter, which will increase increase earliness. If the "heat" continues to be forecasted forecasted beyond this week, strawberry farms at early sites should be open for business by June 26 - 30th. There probably won't be any "volume" "volume" of strawberries coming from this area until July 1st. Pickers will be treated this year to two new varieties from Nova Scotia named Annapolis and Cavendish, which should be available in substantial substantial acreage.
