Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, July 6,1994 5 Tyrone Church Organist Retires Social and Personal From Keyboard After 15 Years ~ Graduale ~ Bmhday w,shcs Jacqueline Vaneyk is too young to "retire" from anything, but Sunday, June 26lh 1994, was Jacqueline's last Sunday as Tyrone United Church's organist; Jacqueline retired. This event marks the end of an era; for the first time, the new church organist, like recent ministers, will commute into the community. Although Jacqueline committed herself as organist at Tyrone in December December 1979 "for a. year", she has filled the position for nearly 15 years, and her musical contribution to the church goes back much farther. Jacqueline began playing the piano piano at Sunday School before 1950 under under the supervision of Mrs. Elsie White, who encouraged everyone who took music lessons to play for singing and to play what was known as the "special" at the Sunday School pre-class assembly. During her. teen years, Jacqueline sang in the church choir. Jacqueline often accompanied the singing at the Sunday School Anniversary Anniversary services during the early 1960's. Those were years when the Sunday School Anniversary still bore some resemblance to the big production production it was in the recent past, with full-blown, well rehearsed choir pieces pieces warbled out over the flowerdecked flowerdecked church full of proud parents and visiting relatives, by girls in ruffle-trimmed, ruffle-trimmed, new summer dresses, and tidy boys with slicked down hair. Through the 1970's Jacqueline played for and directed the Christmas pageants; played when the church or ganist, Elinor Brent was ill in the winters; accompanied the Junior Choir; and played for a few weddings. weddings. On Sunday, June 5, 1994, Jacqueline's Jacqueline's contribution to music at Tyrone was acknowledged and Jacqueline was honoured with gifts, and in an address "on behalf of the congregation congregation of Tyrone United Church, friends, choir members both past and present, neighbours and family," . spoken by choir member Gail Ha- siuk, assisted by long-time choir member, Marion Hoar. Gail stated, "none of us can truly appreciate the hours of endless practice that are necessary necessary to perform at such a high standard. standard. Being the organist and music director did not mean merely appearing appearing for an hour on Sunday mornings. It meant attending music school, ana lyzing music, determining the talents of choir members, teaching music, and inspiring us all." With typical good humour and playfulness, Gail said, "we know you won't soon forget full moon choir practices, unruly choir members, unruly unruly husband, (John is a choir member), member), brides who precede grooms, and anxiety attacks. It has been a privilege privilege and a pleasure to serve in your choir. You opened the door to the full potential of the joys of music for both choir and congregation" Jacqueline replied that she had really enjoyed the years with the choir and the preceding years. "There has been a tremendous tradition of music in this church starting with Charlotte Clemens, who was the first organist in this church, (grandmother of former choir member Gordyn Brent), Velma Staples, Arthur Brent, Myrtle Virtue and Elinor Brent. The tradition of music will go on," Jacqueline Jacqueline said, "we have found a new organist and I think he will do a superjob." superjob." In addition to fulfilling organist- choir duties, Jacqueline organized a choir festival in 1990 and in 1992 with neighbouring choirs participating, participating, mating use of the fine acoustics of Tyrone Church sanctuary. Jacqueline relates some of the pit- falls she experienced as organist for weddings: no power at the organ just before the wedding - the fuses had to be replaced; "Here Comes the Bride" - no bride, more music, "Here Comes the Bride" - no bride, a longer wait while the minister located the problem problem and finally a bride appeared; "twice I never got to play "Here Comes the Bride" - the bride was already already there." Some of the stimulating aspects of the job for Jacqueline were the variety variety of choirs in age, size and ability; she found all choirs to be loyal and dedicated, as the present choir certainly certainly is. Jacqueline worked with six ministers. Acquiring the new organ in 1986 was a thrill, and a new piano in 1988 was supportive of the congregation congregation for the music program. Sincerely it was said, "we wish you the best, Jacqueline Vaneyk, in your future endeavours and we thank you for your dedication and gift of music." by Bessie Vaneyk DARREN ROBERT LEWIS On June 4,1994, at Nipissing University's University's convocation, Darren Robert Lewis graduated with his Bachelor of Education.
