The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, July 9,1994 3 Neighbor Praises Friendship Shared with Leskard Resident Dear Editor: Earlier this morning, 4 July, 1994, Mike Vogels of Leskard Road, in Orono, passed away in his 70th year. Mike was a good neighbour neighbour and friend, but more than that was the biggest single non-family influence on my life and the way I perceive it and live it on a day to day basis. I first met Mike in late November 1984 when I first purchased the former former Meyers property on Leskard Road adjacent to his. Over the next 9 1/2 years, Mike was to transform a typical city kid into a carpenter, a farmer and backyard philosopher, and in so doing, improve the quality of life of that city kid and teach him lessons that will carry him forward on his own personal journey in life. Mike was a retired farmer, but in reality he was more than that He was a devoted family man who delighted delighted in the presence of his children children and grand-children. He was also a "back yard" carpenter, wood carver, lumberjack, landscaper, hor- ticulturalist, bird watcher, humane trapper, chess player, and as I have mentioned, philosopher. I am writing this letter for two reasons. The first reason is that, lately, lately, we have been reading a lot in the. Toronto papers about crime and its relation to Canadian immigration policies. I think we have to remember remember that for every bad apple we read about, there are 1,000 good ones like Mike who left their own country country and led valuable and productive lives in Canada. And in so doing, not only improved their quality of life, but the lives of those around them and therefore the very country they took up residence in. The second reason is that Mike had such a large impact on my life Workshop Aimed and those that knew him, I want to course, I will, publicly acknowledge that, today, I can only try to implement some we are less than we were yesterday of the many things I learned from for his loss. I for one, am not sure him, and in so doing, honor his how to carry on, but carry on, of friendship and mentoring. Mike, wherever you are tonight, over me as I try to walk in some of it is a much better place for your your footsteps, presence. You are dearly missed Phillip Connor, here and will never, ever, be forgot- 7359 Leskard Road, ten. Take care, my friend, and watch rr, #2, Orono. From Getting Lost Are you lost?
