Jean, accompanied accompanied by daughter Beverly Elas- chuk and her sons Darren and Danny of Oshawa, visited for a week with Janice and David, Jeffrey and Laura. While there, they did much sightseeing sightseeing taking in the Dinosaur Museum Museum at Drumheller, the Olympic Village, Lake Louise, Banff, etc. Mr. Brenton Rickard and Eric Johnson motored to the East Coast for their week's holiday. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Rickard, Keegan and Joel are preparing to move into their new home in New- castle Mr. Claud Flood, Guelph, called on the Storks on Saturday as he was on his way to visit brother Jim at Fra- serville. Retired Judge E. Richard and Mrs. Lynn Lovekin recently returned from Vancouver. Dick presented Professor Professor Slutsky of the University of British British Columbia Law School with the Dean W.P.M. Kennedy Award sponsored sponsored by the Samuel Weir Foundation Foundation of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The award is given to a Law Professor for outstanding teaching ability, and is in memory of the late Dean Kennedy, first dean of the Faculty of Law in the University of Toronto. 'Die award consists of an engraved citation citation and a cheque for ten thousand dollars. Time flies! When Jack Crago was custodian at Lockhart School one of the pupils was Lori Graham. Now, Lori and Pete Vogel are the proud parents of baby Jonathan bom July 21st. We extend congratulations. We also congratulated grandparents grandparents Dave and Betty Adams. Baby Amanda Adams arrived July 20th . Their parents are Doug and Karen. Robert and Lisa's bundle of joy, Colin, Colin, arrived July 12th. Birthday greetings to Marjorie Ha- german, Michael Pearce and Rowena Bragg who is a resident at Mamwood Lifecare Centre, Bowmanville. Miss Bragg will be 104 years old on August August 10th. Congratulations and best wishes to Alec and Marilyn Martin on their 39th wedding anniversary and to Talbot Talbot and June Alldread on their golden wedding anniversary. The Alldreads are receiving guests at their home from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, August 6th. On Friday Mr. and Mrs. Ron Burley, Burley, Mr. Albert Pearce, Mr. and Mrs. Stan Powell enjoyed the beef barbecue barbecue and entertainment at Greenbank United Church. Cloggers, Golden Slippers Orchestra and a male quartet supplied the entertainment. We welcome our new neighbours Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Fournier and family who moved next door on the weekend. On Sunday evening Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell and Margaret Rud- man were supper guests of Judy Powell, Powell, Bowmanville. On Saturday Ross Allin and Ron Burley attended the Steam Show in Beeton, and reported an interesting day. Visiting with grandmother Margaret Margaret Pearce for a week were Jennifer Pearce, Lindsay, and Tammy Gamier, Gamier, Oshawa. On Friday evening the Cragos were guests of George and Madeleine Buckley. On the scenic drive home form Port Hope they called on Zory and Vicki Lesnick, enjoying Vicki's beautiful gardens. We look forward to her many exhibits at the Newcastle Horticultural Society's annual vegetable vegetable and flower show on August 16th. Mrs. Maurice Coulter, Downs- view, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Sherman and Donald, Beeton, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cra- g°« Mr. Bruce Burley, Ajax, had dinner dinner Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Burley. Sympathy is extended to relatives and friends of Andrew McSweeney whose funeral took place on Monday, August 1st, at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Murphy and Mr. and Mrs. Robin Alldread were Saturday evening visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Alldread, Oshawa. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Dean Orleans visited on the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Bessie Dean. St. George's Anglican Church Holy Communion was celebrated by the Rev. Robert Hartley at the 8, a.m. and 11 a.m. services for Trinity 9 Sunday. The sermon centred on the parable of the unworthy steward. We remembered in our prayers Doris Peters who is out of the hospital hospital and presently recuperating at home. Rev. Hartley will once again conduct conduct a basic introduction to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator at St. George's on September 12th, 19th and the 26th from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Those who took the course this last spring found it of great interest. All are welcome. Rev. Hartley is also preparing a printed report of the results of the Congregational Systems Inventory and this will be available for parishioners parishioners shortly. Volunteers are needed for the month of August for coffee following the services. A flower convenor is also required. required. Details may be obtained form Warden Marg Tait at 987-4242. Sunday, August the 7th, Holy Communion will be celebrated at both 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Newcastle Pentecostal Church We were so blessed last Sunday night, July 28, to have Rev. David Black of Newtonville preach for us. The whole theme of the service centred centred around reaching the lost in this dark world. We were also pleased to welcome back William and Lydia Davidson from their holidays in Virginia. Newcastle United Church will resume resume services at .10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sunday, August 7th. Many children attended the Vacation Vacation Bible School last week. Heritage House Tour Sept. 17th The Oshawa Historical Society is pleased to present the Oshawa Hidden Hidden Heritage House and Building Tour to take place on Saturday September September 17 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Several heritage homes and buildings buildings will be featured on the tour as well as the Pioneer Cemetery at Bonnie Bonnie Brae Point. It is an excellent opportunity opportunity to explore the many heritage heritage resources of Oshawa. The com is well tasselled out and the beans look good. Some combines are ready to go, with the wheat being ripe and the oats not far behind. If you have not been into the village village lately be aware that Regional Road 14 is being reconstructed north of Taunton Rd. The section north of the eighth is closed this week. Doris Baker remains in Bowmanville Bowmanville Hospital having undergone further further surgery. She is coming along nicely. • . Congratulations to Elizabeth Wilkins Wilkins who was guest of honour at a birthday celebration on Saturday at the'Orange Hall. Elizabeth was raised south of the village, and nursed in Bowmanville Hospital for many years. She looked marvelous as she greeted friends and former neighbours neighbours on Saturday. Church services are back at regular regular time of 11:15 a.m. with Reverend Paul Boughton, our interim minister. Everyone is welcome. The church pig roast is being planned for Sunday, August 28. X i parrncipacnanl^ * * Scarecrow Contest at Newcastle United Church Bible School THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING Vacation Bible School at Newcastle United Church offered a "down on the farm" theme. The kids in attendance learned and had fun through a number of activities, including crafts, story-times, singing, and games. This group was participating in a relay to see who could create a scarecrow the most quickly, using using a box of old clothes. The Vacation Bible School was held last week. The amendment would delete existing Section 8.2.1 which reads as follows: 8.2.1 Urban areas shall be developed with regard for the principles of adaptability over time, sustainable development, harmony with nature and diversity and integration of structures and functions. In addition, the development of urban areas shall be based on the following: a) compact form; b) mixed uses; c) intensification; d) urban design; e) public transit; f) linkages for pedestrian and cyclists; and g) a grid system of roads. and replace it with the following new Section 8.2.1 : 8.2.1 Urban areas shall generally be developed with regard for the principles of adaptability over time, sustainable development, harmony with nature and diversity and integration of structures and functions. In addition, the development of urban areas should generally consider the following: a) a more compact urban form; b) a mixture of uses in appropriate locations; c) good urban design principles; d) increased public transit usage; e) a grid system of arterial roads. Subsequently, the Regional Council will consider the recommendation of the Planning Committee at a meeting to be held on: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14,1994 AT 10:00 A.M.
