10 The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, August 13,1994 ++★★★★+★★★★★*★★*★***************** BASIC TRAINING - Pauly Shore, as Bones Conway, gets into fighting form during a scene from In the Army Now. Thé movie is currently playing at the Bowmanville Cinemas. The Hollywood Pictures production is all about a team of misfits in an army water purification unit who attempt to demolish a Scud missile battery in the deserts of Chad. It's a task a Special Forces unit has failed to achieve. Regardless of the outcome, In the Army Now promises to score a direct hit on the funny-bone. Pauly Shore in the Army At Bowmanville Cinemas Pauly Shore is definitely not one of the few good men army recruiters have in mind for molding into a soldier. soldier. But that doesn't stop pacifist Pauly from signing up for a hitch in the reserves in order to cash in on all the great perks, including free room and board and a steady salary for doing minimal work. Now, this man's army is putting Pauly to the test. And Pauly, the military misfit portrayed, is serving his country as only he can. He places the entire army on Red Alert. The movie is currently playing at the Bowmanville Cinemas in the Bowmanville Mall. Shows are at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Clipped of his curls and scuttling from a scud base in the African desert, he's battling with everything from rules and regulations to power- hungry authority figures and would- be world dictators. Surrendering to the comic crisis of being a soldier who marches to the beat of a different different drummer, G.I. Shore (as "Bones Conway") is on a mission that promises to score a direct hit in Hollywood Hollywood Pictures' new comedy, "In the Army Now." The story behind "In the Army Now" would seem to be the classic fish-out-of-water premise taken to an extreme. Director Daniel Petrie Jr., who wrote the screenplay for "Beverly Hills Cop," had a bit of experience in putting implausible characters in even more implausible situations. But he feels he really pushed the envelope envelope with Pauly. "If you had to imagine the most unlikely character to join the army, put a rocket launcher on his shoulder and become become a hero," Petrie asks rhetorically, rhetorically, "who would it be?" As mind-boggling as it sounds, Bones does become a hero. It seems there's a Libyan Scud base hidden somewhere in the Chadian desert and when an Army Special Forces Unit fails in its mission to find and destroy it, the task falls to Bones and his water purification team. Gaddafi will never know what hit him! The four members of the water purification unit are as diverse a group of individuals as one would ever find. Director Daniel Petrie Jr. calls the characters "knuckleheads." "Bones Conway is the quintessential quintessential screw-up," says Pauly Shore of the character he plays. "He can't hold a job. He has no respect for authority authority and no future to speak of. Bones is really going nowhere, all he really has is this pipe dream of owning a stereo store and he thinks joining the reserves will make it happen. He's in it for the money and nothing else. Others in the team include Jack Kaufman, Bones' best friend, who has no idea why he's in the army except except for the fact that he always follows follows his friend. TTiere is also Christine Christine Jones, who happens to be the only member of the team anxious for the rigors of battle. Finally, there is Fred Ostroff, just out of dental school, and perhaps the most neurotic neurotic human being on the planet. He joins the reserves on the suggestion of his therapist. Filming "In the Army Now" took place in and around Los Angeles, Yuma, Arizona, and Ft. Sill, in Law- ton, Oklahoma.
