THURSDAY, AUGUST 18TH CONCERT PIANIST GIVES BENEFIT PERFORMANCE - Pianist Christine Alison Wallner will perform on Thursday, August 18th, at the Bowmanville High School Auditorium. The program, which begins at 7:30 p.m. will include Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. The concert is presented by the Bowmanville Lions Club, with proceeds from the evening going to the Lions "Sight First" program, an international project geared towards eliminating blindness. Tickets are $10 each. MIDNIGHT MADNESS -- Another of the Bowmanville Business Improvement Area's ever-popular Midnight Madness sales is coming your way. On Thursday, August 18th, from noon to midnight, the stores in the downtown will be open to feature special merchandise or sale items. And, from seven p.m. to nine p.m., there will be a lawnchair concert in the Town Square, featuring the Clarington Concert Band. SATURDAY, AUGUST 20TH CLAY AND GLASS- The Art Gallery of Northumberland presents Fireworks '93, an exhibition of thirty-four functional and non-functional clay and glass pieces by members of FUSION: The Ontario Clay and Glass Association. The exhibit is being shown from August 20th to October 2 in the main gallery at Victoria Hdll, 55 King Street W., in Cobourg. Admission is free. The three sets of two riders will continue east along Highway Two on their 2,300-kilometer trek across Ontario. They urge supporters to "drop a loonie in the bucket" and join them for a short ride on their own bikes. HERITAGE CANOE DAY- A celebration of canoes and canoeing will be held at Lang Pioneer Village, 10 miles southeast of Peterborough, on Sunday from 1 p.m to 6 p.m. All interested are invited to take a ride on the Indian River, visit the Canadian Canoe Museum and see how canoes and paddles are made. There will be special exhibits and wagon rides. MCLAUGHLIN MEANDER- Come join the McLaughlin Meander at Darlington Provincial Park in Courtice for a nature hike. Anyone interested is asked to meet at the boat launch at 8 a.m. Following the early morning tour there will be a kids' program called Colors and Camouflage from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., where kids learn through games how animals, birds and insects protect themselves in nature. FOR YOUR INFORMATION APPLE BLOSSOM AWARDS - Time is running out for those planning to submit nominations for Clarington's Apple Blossom Awards. However, a few additional days have been added to the August 10th deadline in order to ensure as many nominations as possible are received. This year, the Municipality of Clarington will be recognizing the efforts of residents who have made their front yards or gardens a source of pride for themselves and their neighbours. The Apple Blossom Awards will be presented to residential and commercial property owners who deserve to have their work recognized. Judging will take place in the final weeks of August. Judging will be done by the Newcastle, Orono and Bowmanville Horticultural Societies. Nomination forms are available through the Community Services Department of the Municipality of Clarington. MUSEUM T-SHIRTS AVAILABLE - A limited-edition T-shirt depicting the old "Cream of Barley" cereal box cover in full color has been created. The shirts are a joint project by the Bowmanville Museum, Clarke Museum and Archives and the Visual Arts Centre, They are designed to raise awareness of these three main cultural facilities in Clarington. The Visual Arts Centre in Soper Creek Park, Bowmanville, is housed in the former Cream of Barley Mill. Shirts are available from the Visual Arts Centre or the two museums for $15. They are being sold as a fund-raising project. This is the 14th year for the run, which has raised over $136 million for cancer research. Local organizers are needed if the run is to be successful this year.
