Rave Reviews for Concert Pianist The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, August 24,1994 5 Garlic Farm Part of Countryside Adventure It was with pleasure that I accepted accepted the inviuilion to attend a concert at Bowmanvillc High School on August 18, not only as a critic, but for my own personal enjoyment, to hear the compositions by composers Mozart, L.V. Beethoven, and F. Chopin, come to life under the skilled artistry of Christine Alison Wallner, well- known Austriain concert pianist, and daughter of highly respected Rev. and Mrs. Langley of Bowmanvillc. The stage was set, and beautifully decorated with shrubs and graceful palms kindly donated by Jensen's Nurseries, large pots fdlcd with vivid flowers donated by Rekker's Nurscr- Results of Piano Examinations Announced Congratulations; to all my students who did formal Royal Conservatory Exams last Spring. Address - 104 James St. in Newcastle Newcastle ics, and the Yamaha Concert Grand Piano donated by Walters Music Centres. The auditorium was filled to capacity capacity and amidst the gentle sounds of quiet conversation and laughter, one sensed an atmosphere of excited expectancy as they awaited the arrival arrival of Ms. Wallner. The evening's performance began with Mozart 12 Variations. This very pure music of Mozart, an Austrian composer bom in 1756, was quite delightful, delightful, opening with the simplistic melody that we all know as "Twinkle, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." As we move from the first to the twelfth variation on this opening theme, Ms. Wallner shows her artistry and musicianship musicianship as she weaves from light, gentle, and airy passages, displaying beautiful tone, to skillfully ornamented ornamented sections with lovely trills and turns. There was a lovely flow between between tempo changes. The faster tempos were clear and bright with nice staccato playing and the slower variations had beautiful flowing melody melody lines with lovely phrasing and tone. The program continued with Sonata Sonata No. 21 in C Major OP. 53, (Waldstcin) by Beethoven, a German Bom in Bonn in 1770 who spent most of his life in Vienna and had become become totally deaf by the year 1824. The first movement was beautifully beautifully played, with a nice opening setting the atmosphere of the work. The tempo tempo was good creating an air of excitement. excitement. There was lovely phrasing and syncopation, and the melody lines had a lovely singing quality. The following movement captured the pastoral effect of the music with lovely tone and beautiful melody line. It also showed the accomplished technical skills of Christine; however, however, at no time did the difficult techni cal passages overpower the artistry of the performance. The soulful feeling of the music was always present. The latter part of the program featured featured 24 Preludes OP. 28, by the French composer Chopin bom in 1810. These showed the musician- ship and virtuosity of the performer. From the introduction through Prelude Prelude No. 1 to No. 24, Ms. Wallner captured the romance of Chopin's music, taking us from strong powerful powerful sections to delicate nuances of beautiful sound shown in lovely melody melody lines, good phrasing, clear runs, and effortless playing; This was a well-balanced program enjoyed by the attentive audience who showed their appreciation by giving Ms. Wallner a standing ovation ovation as she graciously received numerous numerous bouquets of flowers from many children of all ages. For an encore Ms. Wallner played 'Prelude ct Nocturne' Opus 9 Klavicr by Alexander Scriabin. This Nocturne Nocturne is played totally by the left hand and Christine played it with grace. "How beautiful the music was, Christine" and I thank you for your dedication that is so necessary to perform perform at such a high level of virtuosity- virtuosity- I sincerely thank all those persons who helped make this highly successful successful evening possible. Thank you Christine for sharing the Gift of Music that you have been given to help raise money for the Lions Lions International Project, Sight First, to bring the gift of sight to others around the world.
