Hospital Seeks Children for Asthma Study The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, August 27,1994 9 Eldad-Hampton Minister Honored at Retirement Party The Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, Chest Division, is offering asthmatic children between the ages of 5 to 12 years the opportunity to participate in a six-year asthma trial entitled the Childhood Asthma Management Management Program (CAMP). The aim of the project is to help asthmatic children to be the healthiest they can be. It is sponsored by the American Program Helps Heart Patients Heart to Heart offers a program of eight weekly meetings. Specialists from different fields, cardiology, nutrition, nutrition, psychological aspects, to name a few. It will provide you and your partner with information and answers answers to your questions, on all aspects aspects of heart disease. The next session will begin September September 7, 1994, and will accommodate accommodate 10 (ten) couples. The Hospital for Sick Children is one of eight centers (the only Canadian one) each looking to recruit 120 asthmatic children. In order to be eligible to enrol, asthmatic children will undergo a thorough screening process during which time several tests will be performed performed to ensure that they are suitable suitable candidates. Once they are accepted accepted into the program, children will be randomized into one of three treatment treatment groups - two anti-inflammatory groups and one as required bronchod- ilator group. All children participating participating will receive a bronchodilator rescue rescue inhaler to be used as needed. CAMP will help to answer the question question of whether it is better to treat asthma with preventive medications or to treat asthma only when the child is symptomatic. Other issues this study hopes to shed light on is the effect effect of asthma medications or asthma itself on children's physical and psychological psychological growth and development and lung function. Participants will benefit from close monitoring of their health status and growth over many years. Big Brothers Hold Kite Fest In Courtice On Saturday, September 1U big Brothers of Clarington will host their 2nd Annual Kite Festival at Courtice Secondary School, 1717 Nash Road, Courtice. The community is invited to attend this 'Celebrate Durham '94 Event' from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Children can take part in a kite contest and kite race. All kites must be homemade. Instructions for building building a kite are available from the Big Brother office. Call 623-6646 or drop into the office at 23 Scugog Street, Bowmanville, Monday to Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. If children do not have a homemade kite there will be 40 kite kits available for $2.50 (first come basis) on the day of the festival. Talent Contest Part of Durham Central Fair When the Mundell Family present their show at the Durham Central Fair on September 10 a new feature will be added. A Talent Contest, open to all ages. Classes for eight and under, 12 and under, 18 and under, 19 - 49 and 50 and over will be offered. First, second and third prizes will be given in each category.
