Now that the ice is in the arena, we wonder how many players will exchange their baseball spikes for a pair of hockey skates once this weekend is complete. GO AHEAD AND JUMP -- The latest word we've received on ski jumper Jeremy Blackburn of Orono has been positive. At a competition in Park City, Utah, he finished first, ahead of 31 other competitors with a jump of 95.5 metres off of the 70 metre jump. The competition was part of the Bud Dry Big Air Festival held August 23-24. The jump was made on plastic, which substitutes nicely for snow during the summer months. Jeremy is currently training in Europe, and will be representing Canada at a number of world class competitions during the 1994-95 season. SHOW OF SUPPORT -- It was mentioned in this column a month ago that Paul Murdoch was preparing to head off to the Dominican Republic where he will represent Canada in karate at the Junior Pan-American Games. In need of financial support, he received enough from members of the Maple Leaf Club, where he trains, to make the trip. His coach, Charles Kennish, is hopeful that his star pupil will have a strong enough showing to bring home a medal. MIHHIIIH ORONO FAIR ACTIVITIES -- Now that Labour Day has passed, we can all look ahead to attending the Orono Fair, which always attracts a large crowd. There are a number of events taking place throughout the.four days from Thursday until Sunday, but a couple that we will be keeping our eyes on will take place on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. As always, we have every intention of attending the demolition derby which gets underway on Friday night, while the harness horses take to the track on Sunday afternoon. Not only are both events fun to watch, but they also offer great photo opportunities. •eeeeeeeeeee SLO PITCH FINALS -- The Newcastle Boys' Slo Pitch League will bring their season to a conclusion on Saturday evening with the championship games of the various age divisions taking place. The juniors will play at 6:00 p.m., followed by the intermediates at 7:30 p.m., and the seniors at 9:00 p.m. All of the games will be on the diamonds at the Recreation Complex. NEW COACH HIRED -- The Oshawa Generals announced the hiring of assistant coach John Goodwin for the 1994-95 campaign. John spent three seasons in the OHL with the Soo Greyhounds in the late 1970's. In his final year, he tallied 56 goals and 110 assists for a total of 166 points to lead the league. He then signed with the Montreal Canadiens in July of 1981, and spent a number of years bouncing around in the minors. John is an employee at Ontario Hydro in Bowmanville.
