She would be uncomfortable taking a trip to kill time or escape or just be a tourist passively observing. Last year we went to Portugal in order to visit the wine country in northern Portugal and part of the agenda, as always, was to bring home something as a permanent, evocative reminder of that trip. Now Portugal has some wonderful crafts that have been practised down through the centuries - leather, lace, pottery, gold jewelry, and perhaps most notably, hand- painted tiles. As we drove through the north of Portugal we made many stops at small shops with hand-painted tiles and eventually we found a panel with just the right colors and the right overall dimension for our kitchen wall. The price was such that we wanted to bring them home packed carefully in our suitcases among our clothes rather than trust them to a shipping firm which would deliver them much later at considerable expense and perhaps damaged. If even one was damaged it would spoil the whole panel. We got them safely into the country and home without mishap, but it was months before we agreed as' to their location on the wall and until I had time to put them up. We finally decided they should go up a la Portuguese, directly onto the wall, just as they did, inside or outside the buildings. After stripping the wallpaper, I carefully laid out the exact dimensions of what would be the finished panel, including the mortar by Ben Bramble joints. I screwed a temporary support to the wall for the bottom row of tiles and laid on an adhesive base with a toothed trowel and placed the tiles into the . mortar bed. Spaces between the tiles were kept uniform by means of plastic spacers that allow us amateurs to do professional looking work. After tapping them firmly into the bed with a short piece of two by four and a hammer so all were dead level, I waited for the mortar to set and then applied the grout to the joints by using a firm rubber squeegee moving diagonally across the joints. After cleaning up the tile faces by removing the last of the grout, I carefully cut a mitred frame to finish off the panel. I removed the bottom support and screwed the frame to the wall using "trim head" drywall screws. They have tiny heads that leave a very small hole when they are driven beneath the wood surface. It is quite amazing that even though the tiles are originally laid out and painted as a panel with the tiles touching each other you can set them in mortar with a 1/4" grout joint between them and there is no distortion of the pattern. The panel is definitely the focal point in our kitchen and the only regret I have about the whole exercise is that I applied them directly to the wall rather than to a plywood panel which l could easily remove from the wall should we ever move. My next project is a small table that will support the beautiful circular piece of marble inlaid with semi precious stones that Linda brought back from India.
