First Prize Winner in Battle of the Bands Nepicurian, a local band comprised of Bowmanville and Oshawa musicians, took first prize in the Battle of the Bands competition held at the Durham Central Agricultural Society's Orono Fair; They were selected from four contenders and won a prize of 10 hours of studio time plus $250. The group performs many of its own songs, along with cover songs by other groups. Their music is in the style of the group, Van Halen. "We play anywhere there's electricity," adds guitarist Jamie Oxenham. They also won the Molson Canadian Bat- tie of the Bands competition in Pickering and will be performing at Busters in Newcastle Village on Halloween weekend. Post Painterly Abstraction at Robert McLaughlin Gallery Winners Selected In Juried Fine Arts Exhibit at Centre The Visual Arts Centre is pleased to announce the winners of the Fourteenth Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition. Juror Paul Bennett had a difficult task selecting works from over two hundred entries. Awards were presented on Sunday, Sunday, September 18th, at 1:30 p.m. at the Visual Arts Centre Open House. Fourteen artists received cash and honorable mentions. Patricia Gummer accepted "The Best in Show" award for, her piece entitled, 'Ceremonial Robes'. Celebrations Mark 200th Anniversary of Settlement An exhibition of works from the permanent collection will open at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on Thursday, October 27. The exhibition is entitled The Optical Challenge: Post-Painterly Abstraction.
