Pioneering Families Remember 200 Year History of Darlington The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, October 5,1994 13 1995 Snowmobiles andATVs Unleashed at Asselstine's Yamaha by Laura J. Richards The first white settlers of Darlington Darlington Township landed at what was called Barber's Harbour (now Port Darlington) on Oct. 2 1794. He then took the crowd on a historical historical journey on how his ancestor left the Isle of Wight to New York state, then to Upper Canada. Dr. Trull also noted the elopement of his ancestor with Lydia Casey before before he landed here. "A journey that took them one month and one day to make would take you or I one day," Dr. Douglas Trull told a packed lawn on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 2,1994. There were a couple of firsts with the Trull family in Darlington Township: • John Casey Trull was the first while child bom in Durham County. Dr. Trull noted the child was considered to be such an oddity with the natives in the area that many came to sec him. • Granny Trull as Lydia Casey Trull became known as, was the local local doctor. "With her herbs and midwifery skills, she ministered to the sick." It seems that her cure for colic was potent potent and the results were favorable. Her secret was ground-up root of wild turnip. The Trull family was not the only family represented at the Bi- Centennial celebrations. Representatives from the Burk and Conant families, as well as prominent Clarington families and politicians were at the Bowmanville Museum for the Bi-centennial ceremonies. ceremonies. The "house" his family wintered in was constructed from black ash with a thatched roof. Over the winter the family caught-29 foxes which in turn when traded bought the family 11 barrels of flour, Burk told the assembled group of listeners. As the family grew and prospered prospered the Burks built and managed a saw mill, a grist mill, and an inn. Justice Roger Conant told the group that at this point in time, none of the land of the Conant family is still owned by the present day Conant Conant family. In a covered wagon the family members came from the United States for the free land being offered to loyalists. "The family followed the north shore of Lake Ontario and settled at the mouth of a little creek," Mr. Justice Conant said. He noted, "it took great strength and determination" for a family to take up their roots to move to another another country to build lives of their own. "May our families display the same determination and strength to meet the challenges in our world today," today," Mr. Justice Conant remarked. Winton Bagnell, a local historian, tried to get people to envision what their ancestors had to deal with when they landed 200 years ago. He noted, "the trees of the woods came right out to the beach" and their cabins had to be built prior to the falling of the winter's snow. Bagnell emphasized that their lives were much different than what we live today. Councillor and Acting Mayor Ann Dreslinski said, "this area takes great pride in its heritage. We are in a community that recognizes what we had." After her brief speech, she and Bagnell unveiled a large bronze plaque which is to find its final resting resting home at Rotary Park upon the park's completion.. - The plaque reads: Darlington Township Bicentennial Bicentennial The settlement of Darlington Township began with the arrival of the Burk, Trull and Conant families. They came from Massachusetts via Oswego and Niagara to land in Port Darlington on October 2,1794. Even though life in the wilderness wilderness brought with it many hardships, hardships, these families flourished and played important roles, not only in the settling and development of Darlington Darlington Township, but in the forging of the whole of Upper Canada. The Burk family went on to develop develop a local business within the valley surrounding Barber's Creek. Through their industry they helped the community of Darlington Mills, now known as Bowmanville, to grow and flourish. The Trulls were cornerstones of the growing community. They were prominent figures in lake shipping, early militia and local government affairs. The Conants were instrumental in tire settling of the western portion of Darlington Township. They later became influential in governmental and judiciary affairs. The prosperous farms, thriving communities and vibrant industry of Darlington Township began with the diligence and vision of our three pioneer families which laid a foundation foundation built on by those who followed. followed.
