The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, October 19,1994 9 Hockey Champs Begin Defense of League Title by Brad Kelly The junior boys' soccer team at St. Stephen's high school may have the dubious honor of being the first team to compile a perfect record, yet be excluded from league playoffs. After assembling three wins and a pair of tics to open their South Kawartha season, the team was found to be using three ineligible players. As a disciplinary move, the league ruled that the five earlier games would be credited as losses towards the record of St. Stephen's. "I'm not disappointed with the decision, and I respect what they've done," said coach Joe Bitonti about the league ruling. Bitonti was unaware unaware that the players he was using were ineligible. A protest was filed by St. Stephen's. Stephen's. After a review meeting of league officials that was held Monday, Monday, everyone involved decided it would be best if the original decision decision stood. Which leaves St. Stephen's scrambling to gain one of four playoff spots that arc available. Since the decision, the team has reeled off another win and tie. In one of its most recent outings, Anthony Anthony Scanga and John Simiana had two goals apiece, while Ian Robinson Robinson had a single in a 5-0 shutout over St. Marys. St. Stephen's led 1-0 at halftime, but poured in four unanswered goals in the second half. "The decision has brought the team together, and hasn't affected their on-field performance at all," said Bitonti. With a number of returning veterans, veterans, the team had the nucleus of an organization that could challenge for the league championship. After reaching the playoffs last season, this was supposed to be the big year before many of the players graduate to the senior level. "It would be disappointing if we don't make the playoffs, because we have one of the best teams in the league," Bitonti stated. "I thought we could challenge for the league championship. Now our goal is to make the playoffs and take it one game at a time from there." St. Stephen's will close out the season at Cobourg West on Thursday.
