But there is an alternative, and that is saving: the POWER SMART way. October is POWER SMART Month in Ontario, and to affirm its longstanding concern for helping customers customers control their bills and environmental environmental preservation and cost containment, containment, Ontario Hydro recently joined Power Smart he., a Vancouver- based consortium of utilities and energy energy organizations committed to jointly promoting the smart use of energy. According to Ontario Hydro Chairman Maurice Strong, "This program program will add to our own energy- efficient accomplishments and accelerate accelerate our energy-efficient initiatives." Not to be left out in the cold, Ontario Ontario consumers can benefit too from this program. Across the province, in home building centres and department department stores, in hardware stores and grocery chains, the same, single message message is being carried: "YOU'VE GOT THE POWER TO SAVE!" Save on feature-priced appliances and "low-E" windows. Save on more than 25 energy-efficient products - including insulation, weatherstripping, weatherstripping, caulking and programmable thermostats. Look for the Power Smart label in stores. In bold red, white and black display display units, consumers will find many of the very feature-priced, energy- efficient products that can help convert convert their homes into POWER SMART homes. They will also find brightly coloured flyers, brimful of information and handy tips on ways to conserve not only energy, but money too. For every penny saved on an electric bill today, means dollars dollars available for spending elsewhere tomorrow. As winter's grip grows tighter, uncontrolled uncontrolled air leakage can account for 30 to 40 per cent of a home's heat loss. But by insulating, weatherstripping weatherstripping and caulking, that same home - be it house or apartment - can become become a snug and cozy POWER SMART home. Insulation is the best way to maintain maintain comfort and energy efficiency, as it keeps heat in, and cold and dampness out. There are numerous types of insulation: among them, fiberglass fiberglass bait, high-density foam board, mineral wool and polystyrene board. Ask your local retailer for advice advice on the type that suits your needs. Weatherstripping around exterior doors and windows will reduce both drafts and condensation. Caulking helps plug air leaks and seal cracks around windows, doorframes, baseboards, baseboards, sill plates and pipe openings, and choices include clear silicone, acrylic latex, butyl rubber and polyurethane polyurethane foam. A thorough job of air sealing can cut up to 25 per cent from any heating bill. Programmable thermostats can save electricity by lowering the temperature temperature when no one is at home, raising it during peak activity times, then lowering it again overnight. Because windows are particularly vulnerable to heat loss, energy- efficient- windows, or "low-E" windows, windows, are best. Specially coated to reflect reflect heat, they are as effective as triple glazed windows, but without the added bulk and weight. Proper installation installation and scaling around the windows windows is very important. The six major appliances - refrigerators, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, clothes washer and dryers - consume 24 per cent of the average household's household's electricity use. By operating these appliances more efficiently, the POWER SMART household can save both energy and money. When purchasing a new appliance, appliance, the POWER SMART consumer knows to first consult the "second price tag", or the Energuide label. This is the label that indicates the ap- ■ pliance's electricity consumption in kilowatt hours per year. The lower the number, the more efficient the appliance, appliance, and the cheaper it is to run. Because an appliance lasts a long time, small differences in Energuide ratings between models add up to large savings. Today's refrigerators use at least 40 per cent less energy than models built in 1990. The most cncrgy- cfficicnt refrigerator is one that is kept clean, both inside and out, and never overcrowded. The best temperature temperature setting is 3 degrees Celsius (37 degrees F). If not frost-free, a freezer should be defrosted often for maximum effectiveness, effectiveness, kept no more than 2/3 full, and set at - 18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees F). When using the top elements on a stove, the size of the pot should match the size of the element, and lids should be used whenever possible possible to conserve energy. When using the oven, it should be pre-heated for baking no more than ten minutes in advance, and always kept scrupulously scrupulously clean. Although more expensive at the outset, a self-cleaning oven is better better insulated than a regular one. and consumes less energy during normal usage. The best dishwasher comes equipped with an "econo-wash" cycle, cycle, which uses less hot water, and an energy-saver switch to turn off the heating element, thus allowing dishes to air dry. Since one quarter of all hot water is used for clothes washing only a full load, rinse it in cold water, and run it through the spin cycle twice before before loading in into the dryer. One of the largest users of monthly monthly kilowatt hours is the dryer. To counter this, avoid over-drying, which damages your clothes, use the cool-down feature to reduce the heat in the last 5 to 10 minutes, and clean the lint filter after each load. And so, to hold back the winds of winter and hold down the cost of energy, energy, the smart money this year is on POWER SMART. Local retailers, province-wide, arc now stocked with everything the POWER SMART consumer will need to keep the outdoors out and the indoors in. leaky MfBIER DON'T HESITATE!!!
