10 The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, October 22,1994 Phone Brad Kelly at 623-3303 Oshawa Generals Name Captain for 1994-95 RUPA SEEKS NEXT FIGHT -- Professional boxer Nick Rupa is patiently awaiting his next fight. As reported here earlier, he has split from trainer Lou Duva, and has recently been spending time with legendary trainer Angelo Dundee, who guided heavyweight champion Muhammed Ali throughout his career. Nick, 28, hasn't fought since March, but is hoping to have a fight before the month of October closes out He has returned from Honda where he spent some time training, and is currently back home in Virginia. In 25 professional fights, Nick has only lost three times (to Aaron Davis, Anthony Jones, James McGirt). All of his defeats came at the hands of world title contenders The Oshawa Generals have rejoining the Generals, racking up named fourth year forward Darryl • five goals and seven assists in only Lafrance as the team captain for the six games. 1994-95 season. The hockey club also named Ste- Lafrance has been on fire since phane Soulliere, Eric Boulton and Rob McQuat as assistant captains. Souilliere will be a full time assistant, assistant, while Boulton will wear the 'A' for road games, and McQuat at home. BRING ON THE MOJACKS -- The Bowmanville Eagles are eagerly awaiting their first big test of the year when they entertain the Port Perry MoJacks this Sunday night at the Recreation Complex. It would have been nice if the two teams would have remained undefeated, but that scenario was dashed over the weekend when Port Perry lost to Lakefield on home ice Sunday night. Still, based on the good sized crowd that was on hand to watch the Bobcaygeon game last week, the stands should be filled for Sunday's rivalry. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Record $10 Million Earned By Harness Racing Trainer In 1993, Bill Robinson's stable reached a milestone no other had ever achieved in the sport of harness racing. Horses trained by the Ha- gersville, Ontario, resident earned in excess of $10 million dollars during last season alone. It was no wonder that the talented talented trainer of Standardbred horses was named Trainer of the Year in both his native Canada and the United United States. Robinson's stable in 1993 included some powerhouse performers, performers, led by the outstanding three- year-old pacing colt, Presidential Ball, who set a single season's earnings earnings record of $2,222,266. Ironically, the record he eclipsed had belonged to another Robinson- trained performer, Precious Bunny, who set his record in 1991. Other stable stars during last year's season for Robinson included the tough three-year-old pacing filly Ellamony ($581,335), and the diminutive diminutive two-year-old trotting miss, Armbro Monarch ($441,071), both of whom earned divisional honors at the end of the season. The only thing missing from Robinson's arsenal last season, was a Horse of the Year. Those honors went to Staying Together. However, that missing link will probably be filled this year, thanks to the exploits exploits of Robinson's great sophomore sophomore pacing colt Cams Card Shark. The son of the legendary pacing machine, Cam Fella, went to post 18 times, winning 15 and finishing second second twice. His earnings of $2,264,714 set yet another single season's record for a Robinson- trained performer. Harness racing is actually the second career for Bill Robinson who started his working life at Firestone. At age 25, he became involved with a cheap horse with some friends and soon found himself trading the factory factory life for farm life. He has never looked back. Robinson credits his success to keeping his horses on a schedule, training from his farm in Hagers- ville rather than at the racetrack, and the support he has from his myriad of owners. Of course, it takes talent and ability ability as well to train an equine athlete and keep it in top physical and mental mental condition throughout a gruelling season.
