Yours truly Mike Laing Manager, Bowmanville Eagles Reader Questions Anonymity of Letter Regarding Coaches Dear Editor Last week, an unsigned letter was printed for a concerned parent dealing dealing with the problem of parents coaching their children. It stated in some cases parents have a conflict of whether or not their sons/ daughters should be on the team. The parent had obvious concerns about this being the norm rather than the exception. The author also offered possible or plausible solutions solutions to die problem. I find it somewhat disconcerting that this person chose to use the newspaper as a forum rather than discussing it with the executive of the organization to which this person's person's child belongs. Could it be this person fears that they or their child may suffer repercussions repercussions down the road? Minor hockey in this town must be in a sad state if a person is willing willing to voice a genuine concern, but feels they must remain anonymous for fear - whether real or imagined - of reprisal against their child. Yours in hockey, Jim Conboy The field behjnd Courtice Secondary School hosted an international rugby match last Thursday, as the local team faced high schoolers from Broxboume, England, in a junior and senior exhibition match. First Win for Clarington Girls' Peewees With virtually half the lineup scheduled to play in their first-ever game, it was with a certain trepidation that the Clarington girls' peewees ventured ventured to Cobourg on October 23 for their season opener. However, as play unfolded, an air of confidence crept over the Clarington Clarington bench, as the girls provided a good match for a fast-skating Cobourg squad. Cobourg opened the scoring near the end of the first period, and after a hard-fought scoreless second, added another early in the third. A determined Emily Muir took over at this point, cutting Clarington's deficit in half on the ensuing rush, assisted assisted by Brooke Pakosta and Becky Hale. Three minutes later, on a play initiated by goaltender Karen Rickard beating a breakaway Cobourg player to the puck, Muir completed her hat trick, assisted by Brooke Pakosta (her second), and goalie Rickard. Hard work and solid defence allowed allowed Clarington to preserve their lead, giving the girls the first ever victory victory for a Clarington Girls' Hockey Association team.
