Rickard Recreation Complex in memory of the former mayor of Newcastle who also was the leader of the fund-raising effort which helped build the complex. Sergio Marchi, federal Minister of Immigration, will be the special guest of MP Alex Shepherd and the. Durham Liberals. The evening will include an ethnic foods buffet and prize give-aways to raise funds. On Saturday, October 29, there will be tree-plantings taking place at a number of sites. Bowmanville IGA will be planting about 100 trees on property at the comer of Highway 57 and Highway Two, in Bowmanville. United Church youth group membere will be helping with this project. Meanwhile, in Newcastle Village, the Scouts, Guides, and Octagon Club will be assisting with the planting of trees at a site to be announced. The plantings will take place around 10 a.m. Ontario IGA stores hope to plant a total of 20,000 trees Saturday. Volunteers wishing to help in Newcastle Village are invited to bring their own shovel and drop by the store parking lot at 10 a.m. ■■■•■■■■••ta SUNDAY, OCTOBER30TH SYMPHONY CONCERT - The Oshawa Symphony Orchestra will present a concert of Italian overtures on Sunday, October 30, at eight p.m. The performance takes place at Eastdale Collegiate. Games contests, feats of strength, a pumpkin pie bake-off, hot cider and popcorn are among the attractions. There is something for everyone, young and old, during this special family fun day. Admission is one dollar for adults, 50 cents for children or $2 for a family. There will also be a costumed story-teller, pumpkin carving and pumpkin drying demonstrations and a special Halloween exhibition. At the Harvest Halloween event, Mayor Diane Hamre will draw names of lucky winners from the leisure services committee's "Discover Clarington" passport promotion. The museum is located at Highway 35/115 and Regional Rd. 9, at Kirby. •■•■•■•■■••• THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD WOMAN ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH - A presenuuion by the Company of Sirens theatre group on the topic of violence against women will take place on Thursday, November 3rd, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Bowmanville High School. Admission is free and the event is sponsored by Alliance House Inc. and the Ontario Women's Directorate. T-shirts made by women and children in the community who have been subject to violence will be on display. They arc part of "The Clothesline Project," a powerful and startling message which bears witness to experiences of violence and celebrates the transformation of victims into survivors. GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY MEETS - Chief Gary Edgar, of the Mississauga Scugog Island First Nation will address a meeting of the Whitby Oshawa branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society November 1st. Hours arc from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. You can enjoy multicultural food, music, costumes, songs and dances at the high school. Then, on Wednesday, November 16, there will be a panel discussion on the topic of Unity in Diversity. This discussion takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Ontario Street Public School in Bowmanville. Panelists include a delegate from the Ministry of Citizenship, Dr. David Smith of the Hospital for Sick Children and a local representative. The Unity in Diversity Committee urges everyone to plan to attend these events because they benefit the whole community.
