8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, October 26,1994 At some point during their career, amateur athletes soon come to the realization that their dream of one day competing in an Olympic Games is a goal that will never be reached. For many, it's not a question of their heart or desire, but rather, of their ability. Some fall by the way- side as they test themselves against the elite on the international scene. For others, an injury cuts their careers careers short, A select few, because of the direction direction that the Olympics have taken this decade, will not have the chance to represent their country because a professional will take their spot. That is another issue. And there are others, though the percentage is very low, who have aspirations aspirations of wearing the Canadian colors in the Olympics, but the sport in which they will be competing is uncertain. Yes, there arc those who are gifted gifted enough to have a choice. Such may be the case for Sarah Couch as she ponders what the future future may hold for her. Hockey has been her forte since an early age. She played most of her minor hockey in the Bowmanvillc Recreation League as a goaltender. But provincial recognition came her way a couple of years back when, she made the team of the Bowman- ville Eagles Jr. C hockey club. Tryouts with the National women's women's team followed, as the recognition recognition she was so deserving of came her way. Then, this past year, an invitation of a different sort was presented to her. If she could devise a way to take her puck-stopping ability from the ice to an arena floor and trade in hockey skates for roller blades, then a position with Canada's team destined destined for the World Championships would be hers. She did just that. Couch made the trek to Portugal recently, recently, representing Canada at the Women's World Roller Hockey Championships. Championships. Canada, who won the world championship in 1992, advanced to the gold medal match, but were stopped from repeating by Spain, who prevailed 5-3. Surprisingly, Canada weren't the favourites to win it all. "The newspapers over there didn't expect us to win, but we expected expected to win," said Couch, noting that either of Spain or Italy were favoured favoured to win. Canada eliminated Italy in the quarter-finals. "We knew we could win a medal medal though, we felt that confident." By impressing at this year's tournament, Couch may have opened a new door for her goal to one day reach the Olympics. This summer, plans call for her to return to Portugal for some roller hockey training. Prior to that, she will be off to Utica, New York, at Christmas to receive some personalized personalized Paining and instruction about the nuances of the sport. The reasoning behind all of this sudden interest in the sport is that the 1998 World Championships will be staged in Toronto. As hosts, Canada would like to obviously have a strong showing in their home country. It also goes much further than that. In the year 2000, women's roller hockey will be an Olympic sport. Though it's early to make full commitments commitments to team members, the chances of Couch playing in those games are very good. "Basically, they told me as long Boiler Hockey by Brad Kelly Trophies Come Out at Newcastle Ladies' Sio Pitch Night as I want to play, they'll have a spot for me," she said. "I'd rather make the Olympic ice hockey team, though." Thus, the dilemma, if it can be called Utah The international version of roller hockey is much different from what is currently being played on TSN as they scramble to offer hockey of any variety during the NHL lockout. Four players and a goalie are on the floor at one time. Their skates resemble resemble the older style roller skates, as opposed to the newer version of in-line skates. The sticks are similar to those used in field hockey, while the goalies arc forced to adopt a style that makes them look like a catcher in baseball. "You don't have a lot of movement movement at all," said Couch, who is in her first year of a food and drug administration administration program at Durham College. Much of the strategy of the game is taken from basketball, where defensive defensive zones and picks on offence are used with great regularity. Fans packed the arena for the entire entire world championships. The popularity popularity of the sport amongst fans and their boisterous supporters rivals that of soccer. Couch got the start in goal in two of four round robin games, but failed to get the call in the three playoff games. The Canadian team had a returning goaltender from the World Championship team of 1992 who played the bulk of the tournament. tournament.
