The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, November 9,1994 11 Decision '94 J ublic School Board ■ Ward 3 Bill Lofgren On November the 14th you will be going to the polls to elect your representatives on the Board of Education Education for the next three years. The people you elect are being hired as your representatives at the board meetings. These representatives should present your views to the issues issues and protect your interests. There is one main issue in this election and that is Money. Tax revenues revenues are down across the province, yet we are still bound to escalating costs due to agreements and plans made in the past. I believe that my views on the rising costs of education are much the same as yours. We must bring our spending under control, while working to maintain the high quality of education, which has been established in our region. This is going to be a very difficult task, and it will demand more of our trustees than has ever been asked of them before. Your trustees must arrive arrive on the job with an in depth understanding understanding of our educational system system and a proven record of administrative administrative skill and leadership ability. There is no time for on the job training. training. During my working career I have been directly employed in two occupations occupations which provide the experience required to do an effective job as your representative on the Board of Education. I am a graduate of Queen's University. University. I have worked as a teacher in bo tit the elementary and secondary schools for twenty years. In 1980,1 moved with my family to Orono and assumed the position of Chairman of the Board and President of Canada Yearbook Services (1980) Limited, Bowmanvillc, Ontario. Bob Willsher I believe the role of Trustee is one of the most important elected positions. positions. School Boards, because of the nature of their service, use the largest portion of the local tax bill. The service service offered is also one of the most important that our society offers ... the education' of our young and the on-going education of adults. I believe that the position requires community representatives that possess the skill, Beverley Wakefield The Northumbcrland-Clarington Board of Education covers a wide area from Oshawa to Trenton and from Lake Ontario to the Peterborough Peterborough County boundary. There arc approximately approximately 60 schools, thousands of students and a myriad of individual problems. School Board Trustee is obviously obviously not a job that should be entered entered into lightly. I have served in virtually every committee of the Board. I have also taken a leadership role by chairing a number of the Board's major committees and for the last three years have been chairperson of the Personnel Committee. I have also served terms as Vice Chairperson and Chairperson of the Board. I believe believe I am viewed as a Trustee who has the ability to speak out on issues from a position of knowledge. Education in Ward 3 will need a strong voice to address the many issues. issues. Some of these include: Parental input; the curriculum; measurement of student achievement; funding of education; education; the end of the Social Contract; joining use of facilities; cost of education; education; growth of student population and accommodation; the new school in Newcastle; what to do with the old school; and secondary access to Clarke/Pines Campus. I would like the opportunity to represent represent the people of Ward 3 again. Realizing the commitment to time and energy, I am pleased to be able to run again for one of the three Clar- ington scats on the Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clar- ington Roman Catholic Separate School Board. The past term has for me been challenging and educational in covering covering all areas of the education system. Within the last year I have served on eight different committees such as the Education Committee, Family Life and Religious Education and the Curriculum Advisory Committee. Locally I served on the St. Stephen's new high school committee which proved successful in securing ministry ministry funding. There arc many changes taking place within our education system which greatly concern me. The Ministry Ministry arc mandating a new "Common Curriculum" which will be fully implemented implemented within our schools by 1997. I believe that we as a Catholic School system must ensure that the religious component and gospel values values be fully integrated into all areas of study. Our schools must be places where students not only leant scripture scripture but taught within a Christian community. Curriculum must keep in touch with modem technology as technology continues to increase at a staggering rate. I would like to see more computers in our classrooms with rnore time spent on computer related related education. We in Canada arc still one of the big spenders in education compared to many other western industrialized countries. I think that we can still improve improve our education standards within our present budgetary constraints. One of the responsibilities as a Trustee Trustee will be to make known to the Board and the Ministry of Education the needs and concerns of parents and students. I am committed to improve improve dialogue with parents, the C.P.T.A. and the local parish. If rc-clccted I will play an active role in bring these issues into effect and therefore seek your support on November 14th. I am married with three children. Two have been through the separate school system and one is in grade four at Msgr. Leo Cleary School. I have lived in R.R. 6, Bowmanvillc since 1977 and am active in parish and community activities. My goal is to ensure that students receive the best possible Catholic Education, Education, enabling them to become contributing members of society and the Church. I can view any situation from a variety of viewpoints based on directly directly related experiences as a student, parent, teacher and administrator. I have been a resident of Bowmanvillc for over ten years. I am married with an eight year old son in the Separate School System and I am vice- president of St. Stephen's Elementary School CPTA. I am a graduate of Ryerson Polytcchnical Institute. Also I have four years of teaching experience experience and three years of experience in Admissions and Registrations at the Toronto School of Business. This past May I attended the annual annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Parcnt-Tcachcr Associations of Ontario, where I was introduced to two very important strategic documents: documents: "The Violence Free Schools Policy' and 'The Common Curriculum'. Curriculum'. Parents must be made aware of the contents of both of these documents documents that arc guiding our schools today. today. Changes must be made to ensure Improved Communication between Parents, Teachers, the Board, and the Ministry of Education and Training. _ I am not afraid to fight for anything anything that will help to give our children children the best education possible. I am very interested in hearing from parents parents so that I can be aware of their concerns and reflect them in my decision decision making on various issues and expenditures. I can be reached at 623-3763. Cecil Mackesey Caroline Burke 28 years of having my own children in the education system, I have an understanding understanding of some of the problems faced by parents, schools and students today. I also believe that my recent six years as a trustee for the Clarington Public Library will help me to bring an understanding to the discussion of shared facilities. I will be able to see some of the problems from both sides. While we all expect the best for our individual children, school boards must also try to provide the best for all students. From the student who has a hard time learning to the one who has been designated as gifted and everyone everyone in between, all have their own needs and challenges. Teachers and school boards must find ways to meet these challenges and help the students conquer them to the best of their individual individual abilities. This is my first attempt to run for an elected position. While in some ways it has ben a scary time, I must confess that I am enjoying the whole process immensely, I am seeking re-election to the Peterborough, Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Roman Catholic Separate Separate School Board. I have served as Trustee for the past six years and feel we have made significant progress in many areas. After many years of hard work, we finally received permission to build a new Catholic High School which will service all of Clarington. The Board has recently agreed to move the project project ahead with the hope of opening in 1997. We have also been given permission permission to constnict a new elementary school in the north end of Bowmanvillc. Bowmanvillc. The Board's new computer master upgrading plan has now been approved approved and implementation of this program must continue to be closely monitored. This technology must continue continue to keep pace with the ever changing requirements that students will face in the business world. However, placement placement is governed by the limitations limitations of page layout and availability of space. been maintained at a zero percentage increase for the last two years by reducing reducing administration costs while still maintaining programs. While many areas of education are of great importance to parents, I believe believe the advancement of computer studies and students obtaining marketable marketable skills must be given priority. School safety continues to be a top priority both here in Clarington and at the Board level. I believe as a Separate School Trustee that while there arc many important important issues surrounding curriculum, facilities and budget cuts we must ensure ensure that we maintain strong Catholic programs if we arc to maintain our identity as a Catholic School system. With your vote I will continue to work with people and provide accessibility, accessibility, accountability, Christian commitment commitment and strong leadership. I believe the current educational system is not adequately preparing students to enter the workforce. The skills needed to enter the workforce arc increasing and sve need to keep pace with these changes. I feel that the biggest educational issues that need addressing arc: * The need to provide leading edge educational tools. * Have educational funding spent on exactly that, our children's education. education. * Find ways to reduce student/ teacher ratio, ensuring our children arc receiving the optimum teacher student interaction. * Reductions in the high numbers of split grade classes in the system. With clearly defined guidclitrcs for student placement in remaining split grades. * There is a hugh need for consultation consultation with all stakeholders to have discussions to define what future skills arc needed and how best to deliver deliver these programs to prepare students students for life beyond the school yard, * We need to reach out to students and demonstrate that their input is welcome and lit at education is a lifelong lifelong necessity. We need to motivate students and show in a concrete, tangible tangible manner that the courses being taiight have a very real purpose that will lead to an attainable goal. * The mainstay subjects such as Math, English and Science, need to be promoted as the foundation to a student's future success. This strong foundation will open the doors of opportunity opportunity to higher education and the choice of jobs one will be qualified to attain. Just Window Shopping?
