Most coaches in the league would envy the position Watson is in. His team sits atop the standings one month into the season. But, after more than a dozen years at this level, Watson has focused focused his attention much further down the road than just the regular season. Sunday night at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, Bowmanvillc Bowmanvillc registered its ninth win of the season, humbling the Lakefield Chiefs by a 7-1 score. Though smiles are plastered across the faces of the players, Watson Watson has a look of concern while answering answering questions following the game. "I'm happy with our record, but not overly excited about the way we are playing," he said. "I don't get excited about the way we play . whether it's good or bad. The guys arc in tune with each other, but we arc still a long way away from playing playing our best hockey." Dave Real broke through offensively offensively for Bowmanvillc, scoring his first two goals of the season. Paul Gagne, Todd Cannings, Brian An- sley, Curtis Hodgins and Darrin Peters Peters had the others. Lakefield's Jason Stockdalc, on a second period power play, fired the only shot to elude Bowmanvillc backup goaltender Jeff Reid, who faced 26 shots. It was only the fourth start of the year for Reid, who has been designated designated as the backup to Barry Crawford Crawford this season. With each start, he has begun to look more comfortable with his role, though it is a difficult situation for him to be in. "It is hard because I was the number one goalie in Uxbridge the last two years, but I have to get used to it," he said of his backup status. "I just come here and do what I'm told, and go in when Barry can't. Between me and Barry, we can handle the job." Though the game ended in favour favour of Bowmanvillc by a wide margin, it was a couple of saves by Reid in the first and second periods that kept Lakefield from getting excited excited about being in a close game. "Tliis game was easy because I didn't get a lot of shots. I'm getting back into a groove now." Bowmanvillc jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period, and extended extended it to 5-0 before Lakefield registered their first goal of the evening. evening. Real's second of the night early in the third, and Peters' goal with only 26 seconds left in the game, closed out the scoring. The effort by Bowmanvillc was a much better one than they produced a week earlier in Port Perry, when the MoJacks halted the Eagles' eight game winning streak with a 5-1 decision. decision. 'We hadn't played well in four of five games leading into Port Perry, and they wanted to win more than we did. They beat us everywhere," everywhere," explained Watson. "Our goalie (Barry Crawford) played well, and we wasted his effort. We were too nonchalant." Sunday's game against Lakefield featured a minor flare-up at the conclusion conclusion of the second period. Bow- manvillc's Jay Cannings was taken to hospital to have his eye examined after a brief fight with Darryle Quinn.
