An extended power outage during sub-zero temperatures can have serious serious consequences. People can become become severely chilled, water pipes and other plumbing can freeze, and walls and foundations can crack. Emergency Preparedness Canada, the federal organization responsible for promoting preparedness for all types of emergencies, provides the following safety tips. Advance precautions • If weather conditions appear grim, supplement your emergency food and water pack with additional supplies. Power outages may force local grocery stores, gas stations and other services to close, and sustained stonns can delay deliveries for several several days, • Have a battery-powered radio on hand to find out what is happening. • Keep flashlights, lanterns, candles candles and matches or other emergency lighting devices stored in a handy place. Even in very cold weather, a building with closed doors and windows will retain some heat for several hours. • If you have a standby heating unit, turn it on before the building becomes becomes too cold. If the unit must be vented to the same chimney flue as the furnace, switch the furnace off before disconnecting the furnace flue. • Never use a charcoal barbecue indoors. .. • As soon as you begin to feel chilled, put on a hat, extra socks and mittens. Add extra outer wear or a pair of coveralls as insulation. • Alcohol will not warm you up. Despite the momentary warm glow you may feel, ■ alcohol dilates the blood vessels, which leads to a loss of body heat. Close the lowest valves first and allow air ■ to escape from the upper taps. • Make sure the hot water heater is filled with water before turning on the power. • Warm the building slightly above normal temperature for a few hours to allow it to dry thoroughly. • If the power has been off for along time, check food in the refrigerators, refrigerators, freezers and cupboards for sings of spoilage. Municipalities in Durham Durham Region gather up the Christmas trees on special collection days and put them through shredders which chop them up into small pieces. This mulch is then used in the summer on the flower beds in city parks. Christmas trees arc biodegradable, biodegradable, so they will break down and become part of the soil again.
