' The study, undertaken by BHS students, was in conjunction with Unity in Diversity Week which is (being observed in Clarington. K This survey was given to students students of different cultural backgrounds, backgrounds, which included African, Philipino, Persian, British and Irish. Of die students chosen, those of British and Irish descent said they had never encountered any racial oppression. Those who said they had experienced experienced discrimination reported that most of it had occurred in primary school. These comments were mostly mostly rendered by minority groups. When asked if the students would feel uncomfortable in a majority majority white school, some students said they would feel uncomfortable in a mixed school because you have to watch what you say and do so that you don't offend anyone. The other students reported that they feel comfortable in a majority white .school, but would like to see more '.races inter-act. The students also feel that most racism takes place outside the "school, for example, in hate groups. To finalize the survey, a very important important question was asked: "How do you feel about unity in diversity?" diversity?" The answer that struck me as being being the most significant was: "It's the only way!" Only as a community can we make this happen. Let's join together together and slop oppression. It's the only way. --Buffy Rogers Mi-Cultural Celebration Saturday A multi-cultural celebration at Bowmanvillc High School this Saturday Saturday and a panel discussion next Wednesday, October 16, arc all part of Unity in Diversity Week celebrations celebrations in Clarington. No. 2, Bowmanville © with Elizabeth Belanger-Linkleiter CTC Bahamas There is a lot to be said for quick, short getaways. The choices choices from this part of the country arc few as you do not want to spend half of your holiday getting getting to the destination. For this reason I chose the Bahamas for a long weekend, the weather was guaranteed to be in the 20s when the temperatures in our part of the world were hitting hitting record lows. I wasn't disappointed cither. The weather was warm and balmy balmy and because we left early in the morning we were sitting on the fine white sandy beach before lunch. Nassau is an excellent destination destination for a quick getaway for just a few days. You can lounge on the beach or if you are more energetic, take a jet ski out on the clear turquoise water. If you want to rise above it all, there is parasailing from a raft and you don't even get wet. The casino seemed to be a very popular place -- I however love to go to the shops, they range from the typical souvenir shops to the more upscale clothing clothing and jewellery shops. The most interesting is bartering at the local straw market. There arc numerous choices for short day trips to dive or just spend a relaxing day on a secluded secluded island. She indicated that fcderal/provincial infrastructure grants should have gone to service Courtice lands. "Infrastructure "Infrastructure money should have been spent more sensibly than just being dumped in Orono," she said. Cowman added the town must be concerned with a rapidly-growing population. "We have to consider how best to provide more recreational recreational facilities without increases in tax dollars." During question period, Diane Hamre was asked what progress had been made during her term toward a Seniors' Centre. Hamre cited various various studies that indicated the need for such a facility in Clarington. Activities Activities for seniors are now run out of the Lions Centre by the Older Adult Centre Committee, she said, and the recently-vacated Church Street fire hall is still an option for a permanent site. "We have just engaged engaged an architect who is looking at the old fire hall to study its feasibility feasibility for seniors."
