The same evening, the book will be presented to each of the schools located in Darlington Township. Admission to the book-launching is free and refreshments will be served. The 193 page history book covers such topics as early development, sports, schools, churches, military, hotels, and taverns. STEPHEN'S FOOD DRIVE - St. Stephen's High School will hold a food drive for families in the Bowmanville area on December 1st. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2ND MOONLIGHT MAGIC - Elsewhere in this edition, there are further details of the community Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony which takes place in downtown Bowmanville. The event includes a community carol sing and procession to the comer of King and Temperance St. from St. Paul's Church. The ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. and include plenty of additional carol singing. After the tree-lighting, you're invited to stay downtown for the entire evening. The BIA merchants will be open extra hours and they are offering refreshments and other special activities in their stores. There is also a shuttle-bus running throughout the evening to provide access to the downtown. This traditional launching of the festive season in Bowmanville is an event not to be missed. DANCE RAISES FUNDS FOR HOSPITAL - A benefit dance in memory of Joseph Wayne Glode will be held Friday, December 2, at Bowmanville High School. Hours are from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The dance will feature Centre Lane Band and several other local groups. All funds will be donated to Memorial Hospital's equipment campaign in memory of Joseph Glode. Tickets are $5 per person at the door. The dance is sponsored by the Durham Northumberland Breakers Club. SANTA'S LITTLE HELPERS - A Christmas workshop for 2 to 5-year-olds is being offered by the YWCA. It takes place December 2 and 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The little elves who participate will enjoy stories, games, songs, and making Christmas presents. This program begins at 1 p.m. However, other events also are taking place between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Cards or other games are offered. And at 10 a.m. there will be a demonstration of table decorations with the assistance of Cockerham Florists. CANDLELIGHT VIGILS - A vigil to commemorate the Montreal Massacre and all other female victims of violence will be held on December 6th, commencing at 7 p.m. at the Visual Arts Centre in Bowmanville. This is the third year that the vigil has been sponsored by FOCUS, a Clarington women's group. Donations of cash, clothing or canned foods will be collected in support of the Bethesda House women's shelter. The public is welcome. There is also a candlelight vigil at the Oshawa YWCA, 1 McGrigor St., in Oshawa, on the same evening. HOSPITAL CALENDAR LOTTERY - As part of its "Together We're Better" campaign, Memorial Hospital Bowmanville has launched its sale of lottery calendars. The calendars cost $20, but they offer 365 chances to win prizes. That means one chance every day. Daily draws begin in January, with prizes ranging from $30 to $800. A total of $15,000 in prize money will be available in 1995. For detoils on purchasing your calendar, call 623-3331. Only 3,000 calendars have been printed, which means there are good odds for winning one of the daily cash prizes. TOYS, GAMES AND PASTIMES - An exhibition of over 50 examples of artifacts relating to playtime and hobbies from 1860 to 1960 is on display at the Clarke Museum and Archives. Dolls, puzzles, building blocks, tin toys, sleighs, wagons, a dog cart, toy kitchens, electric toys, musical instruments and plastic toys arc all represented. This feature exhibit will run through the winter months to the end of March, 1995. The Clarke Museum and Archives is located in Kirby, at Regional Rd. 9 and Highway 35/115. Among the evening's events was an elimination elimination draw where several small cash prizes were awarded and a large cash prize of $700 was won by Ron Pope, of Bowmanville. The winner winner is shown above (at right) with Newcastle Lions Club President, Amos Langley. MEETING TO DISCUSS WATERSHED PLAN - The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority is preparing a plan for the Ganaraska River Watershed which will help describe how the environmental ; features function and help assist municipalities in wise land Use and planning decisions. There will be an informal Open House from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, at the Port Hope Recreation Centre on Thomas St. A brief presentation by the Conservation Authority and its consultants, along with a roundtable discussion will take place at the same location, commencing at 7 p.m. CHRISTMAS CONCERT AT BHS -- An evening of Christmas music with the students of Bowmanville High School will be presented on Wednesday, December 7th. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the BHS auditorium. There is a special admission price for seniors. The concert will include a choir and three school bands. STONE FARMHOUSE TOUR - On Saturday, December 10, the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee will present a yuletide tour of historic stone farm houses. The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature homes built by the Scottish stone masons who immigrated to Canada and passed through the countryside near Orono in the mid 1800s. They left behind a stunning architectural legacy as you can see from the tour. The homes will be enhanced by traditional decorations, food and music.
