Dr. Panaro described direct contacts contacts as being people who may have been sharing eating and drinking utensils or who may have been hit by saliva through being coughed or sneezed on. She also mentioned French kissing. "A lot of saliva is passed to and from with French kissing." People who have had direct contact contact are given the anti-biotic Rifampin Rifampin as a preventative treatment. However, these vaccinations only protected 85 per cent of the children. children. Dr. Panaro noted the vaccine only covers four of the 13 types and will only last two to four years. Quebec spent millions of dollars on inoculating everyone from six months of age to 20 years. Yet, there were still cases, she said. Concern was expressed over how much research is being done on this disease. Dr. Panaro told the audience, "Our Canadian government is doing a lot. We have a vaccine and currently currently there are field trials happening happening in Havana, Cuba, for "B" type vaccines. "With P.E.I. and Quebec having vaccinated their young population, that is also research." However, she agreed with those who, she said, must be thinking it's not enough ihe 'SieifStory FOR MORE INFORMATION CALI. 623-5100 Come and Worship with us Sunday, December 4th, 1994 at 11 a.m. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church 623-3432 Temperance and Church St., Bowmanville Rev.
