By Reuben Bakker and Bachel Burghgraef As the rain gives way to colder weather, it is starting to feel like Christinas is actually coming closer. On Thursday, December 15, our choir and bands will perform their annual Christmas Concert. It sounds like an exciting evening. There will be free tickets at the door. Everyone is asked to bring a donation of non- perishable food for the Salvation Anny food drive. As well, a free will offering for the school's music program program will be held. A capacity crowd attended a concert at St. Stephen's High School last week which showcased the school's artistic, musical and dramatic talent. Happenings By Marcia Schryer A new type of Christmas giving is on the agenda for this year's group of Peer Helpers at B.H.S. Instead of the traditional "secret Santas" by which students chose a pal at random, then showered them with small gifts, the Peers have decided to adopt a family for Christmas, The Adopt-A-Family program run by radio station A.M. 640's Jesse and Gene show, allows people to give to a needy family at Christmas by donating food, clothing, clothing, money and toys. The B.H.S. Peer Helping team have decided that instead instead of exchanging gifts with one another this year, they will give to the less fortunate. The Peers are arranging arranging activities to gather as much funds as they can. Our Peers will soon be assigned, by the radio station, station, a family of their own, and will have the joy of knowing they helped fulfil the true meaning of Christmas. After-• Christmas, t-shirts and sweatshirts will be available to all Peer Helpers. The special apparel will feature B.H.S. and the Ontario Peer-Helpers Association OPHA logo on them. The items are reasonably reasonably priced and provide students with excellent souvenirs of their experiences experiences as helpers. The Sounds of Christmas, a concert concert put on by the B.H.S. music ensemble ensemble last Wednesday, December 9, took place in the school auditorium. Door prizes were distributed at the event, which was successful as usual. The band wishes to thank all of the businesses who donated prizes. Some of them include: The Stereo Trend (A1 Storey), Cockerham's Florist, Swiss Chalet, Hooper's Jewellers, Long and McQuade, and many more. Their generosity was greatly appreciated. appreciated. The data processing class at B.H.S. held a Christmas craft sale on December 6 to benefit the Humane Society and The Salvation Army. Under Under the direction of teacher Ms. Davi- na Johnson, the sale was very suc cessful and the class raised nearly $200.00 for the worthy causes. Senior Services day was held on Friday, December 9, and allowed the students who purchased the services of a graduating student the opportunity opportunity to let the soon-to-be grads do some work. The day was fun and entertaining, entertaining, and a little embarrassing for some. Attention, all graduating students! If you want to document the memories memories of your stay at B.H.S. in the year book, pick up a grad write-up sheet in the office before December 16th. Merry Christmas From Lord Elgin P.S First of all, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas from Lord Elgin Elgin Public School. Our school has planned fun activities activities for you and your family. They will be held here on December 20th from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m, You will have an opportunity to visit any classroom you would like and participate in a Christmas Craft, listen to songs, skits etc. Our school's Parents' Committee will also be hosting a Bake Sale during during the evening in the staff room. We will be ending the evening with caroling. Hope to see you there! Tis the season to be Jolly! On December 19, Mr. Payetta's grade 5/6 class will be visiting local retirement homes and Chronic Care facilities, spreading a little Christmas cheer. They have been practising very hard and arc looking forward to ' it. To show our school spirit, we will be holding a red and green day on Friday, December 16. Your child should wear as much as they can of each colour. The class that gets the most points gets a pat on the back saying congratulations. Our school is having its annual canned food drive and mitten tree for the needy. By Jennifer Degraaf and Meghan Read In DCHS sports news, our men's junior basketball team played an exhibition exhibition game against the Clarke team this past Monday, December 5. Although the team suffered a loss, they felt that it was a great warm-up for its first league game on December 8 against Pyrcma. We hope to do better better that game. This past Friday, our women's volleyball teams went to play some exhibition games against Toronto District Christian High. Both teams played hard and well. The juniors won their match, but, the seniors weren't weren't quite as successful. But, they went down fighting. Durham student, Leah Sinclair, ' participated in the Durham Regional Police Games for Disabled Children in Pickering. Leah won the sportsmanship sportsmanship trophy and a trophy for best women's track. Congratulations, Leah! Wednesday, December 7, Durham is hosting its annual "get to know us" day for grade 8 students. Durham students students think it's a great day as most of them get to stay home. Grade 8 students students will get to sample 3 mini classes classes from a selection of 8. Mr. Ewald will perform some of his Science wizardry, wizardry, Mr. Guetter will display his computers. Mrs. Hiemstra will experiment experiment with some art work. Mr. Velt- man will try hard NOT to let anyone lose useful body parts in the Induslri- 1 al Arts room. Miss Smink will have some fun with Drama and Mrs. Ward will do some group-skill games. Besides these activities, there will be a wall mural hanging up which . guest grade 8 students will be encouraged encouraged to mark with a handprint and /autograph. The jazz band will play during a lunch provided by DCHS and there will be a session in which present Durham students will field questions from the visitors about life at DCHS. We hope this day will give area 8th graders a good and fun taste of what Durham Christian High is like. Christmas Concert Held at Bowmanville H.S. O Holy Night was sung by Sarah Fenton while Kim Gifford accompanied accompanied her on the piano. Her clear, bright voice set the stage for the Christmas Conceit held at Bowmanville High School auditorium on Wednesday night, Dec. 7. Afterward, the Wind Ensemble was conducted by three high school students, in place of their music teacher. Taking the baton were Geoff Jones, Jody Richards and Heather Douglas.
