Twenty-one percent believe a lasting lasting and substantial improvement in new home sales has already begun, while another 55 percent believe this will happen next year. Only 8 percent believe that home sales will go down next year, compared with a whopping 64 percent who were pessimistic in 1990. The optimists have climbed •from 8 percent in 1990 to 59 percent this year. "We arc very encouraged by the survey results", says Ward Campbell, a Hamilton home builder who is President of the OHBA. He says the survey substantiates OHBA's own forecast of a four percent increase in Ontario housing starts in 1995 to 50.000 and for starts to remain in the 45.000 to 55,000 range for the next few years. Campbell says Ontario Finance Minister Floyd Laughrcn's forecast of a 12 percent jump to 54,000 starts in 1995, followed by a 25 percent increase increase in 1996, with starts averaging 74.000 in 1996 - 1998, is somewhat optimistic. "It would be nice to sec those numbers, but I don't believe they are realistic." He warns that even with OHBA's more conservative conservative forecast, there will be tremendous tremendous pressure on builders to increase prices. "Municipal levies, including Education Development Charges, are increasing, lumber prices arc rising and the costs of other components in new homes arc going tip." Campbell says the Builders' Association Association and its members will be getting getting a more detailed analysis of their economic future at the OHBA's first annual Economic Focus Ontario, on January 10th, 1995, where a panel of experts will give their views. The Economic Economic Focus will be immediately followed by the popular two-day Ontario Ontario Builder Forum where there will be 24 different sessions for builders, ranging from futuristic construction methods and materials to preserving heritage buildings, Stephen Kassinger, President of the Oshuwa-Durham Home Builders' Association is similarly encouraged by the provincial survey results and anticipates increased new home sales in 1995, By Reuben Bakkcr and Rachel Burghgraef These past weeks have been very busy, here at Durham Christian High. On Thursday, December 15, our school presented the annual Christmas Christmas concert. It was a real success. The choir, directed by Mrs. Glenda Hull sang first, nine selections in all. The opening numbers were done in a circle around the audience, while the choir members each held a candle. On Thursday, Dec. 15th, our school presented • the annual Christmas concert. Sandje Dc Vries sang two solos with • her usual excellence. A number of pieces were performed by smaller vocal vocal ensembles. Those were also well- received. Then the junior wind ensemble ensemble played two Christmas arrangements, arrangements, followed by the jazz band's jazz rendition of "Joy to the World". This piece featured a saxa- phonc solo played by Lonneke Van Oosterom. Both her solo and the group's playing sounded excellent. Next the woodwind ensemble, under under the student direction of Janclle Zwicr, played several numbers. They arc the most "classical" group of the school ensembles and they played very well. The concert came to a close with a spectacular performance by the Senior Senior Wind Ensemble. One of their numbers, "Bugler's Holiday" featured featured three excellent tmmpct players, Tara Nguyen, Shirley Wesscls, and Andrew Wind. A special thanks to Mr. Dennis Oilman who directed the Junior and Senior Bands and the Jazz Band. Several fund raisers have been happening at our school lately. One was a sale of chocolates, sponsored by the Student Council, to raise funds for improving the student lounge. A second fund raiser for the yearbook was a sale of candy-canc-o-grams. Then there arc the ongoing pizza sales, for various causes, which are usually a big hit. On the sports scene, our junior and senior women's volleyball team played some league games on Wednesday, December 14, at O'Neill High School in Oshawa. Our senior team lost their match against O'Neill in three games but beat Courtice in two games. Both teams did very well. In Junior Men's basketball, our team played Port Perry High School, on Tuesday, December 20. The score was 65 to 34 for Port Perry. On Sat urday, January 7 the team will play an exhibition game at Woodlands Christian High, near Kitchener. We wish them well.
